Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) is a leading management institution, with campuses in Delhi and Kolkatta, with a strong emphasis on International business.

Last year, the IIFT Admission Test was held on November 23, 2008. The paper was scheduled for 120 minutes and had a total of 150 questions where the maximum marks were 100. This year the sections have increased to 6 where there were 4 sections in IIFT 07. The sections were Reading Comprehension, Verbal Ability, General knowledge, Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation.

Let’s review what prep institutes including Mumbai based IMS Learning, Delhi based Career Launcher and Pune base Career Forum have to say.

According to IMS Learning, "IIFT 2008 was a fairly easy paper with a mix of easy and moderately difficult questions. One had to spend time in reading each question because it was framed in a lengthy manner. There were no business judgement cases this year."

Section-wise analysis of IIFT 2008

Reading Comprehension:
According to Career Launcher, "The RC passages were on the lengthier side but quite simple. Most of the questions were fact-based and asked for direct data from the passage. One could have just scanned through them and answered the given questions. Like last year this year also saw the use of questions based on matching items in list 1 with items in list 2. The key to answering these was to read the options carefully, as addition or omission of even a single word to the option could have made a difference."

Verbal Ability
Analyzing Verbal section, IMS Learning shared, "There were 23 questions in this section and they asked tested a student's basic concepts pertaining to grammar, vocabulary and word usage. The questions were a mix of easy and moderately difficult ones and a number of constructs featured in the section."

General Awareness
"The General Knowledge questions had a good combination of Business Awareness and Current Affairs. The method of framing these questions was more or less similar to last year's. The General Knowledge section requires the IIFT test taker to be a 'master of the games',” says Career Forum.

Quantitative Ability
"After CAT, which had a reasonably high-level QA section, this paper successfully maintained the high standard of quantitative ability section across Indian B-School Entrance Tests. There was a definite stress on probability and permutation combination, which accounted for 9 questions in the paper. Geometry, the traditional favorite, which was absent in last year's paper, came back with a bang", says Career Launcher.

Reasoning Ability
"This section was a good breather compared to Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation section. It would have been a wise decision to spend more time in this section to increase the attempts and minimize the score", says IMS Learning.

Data Interpretation
On Data Interpretation section, Career Launcher analyzed, "At first glance, this part of the test appeared tough and involved tediously lengthy calculations. A lot of data was given in each question and the options were more like statements to be verified. The DI section was a mix of only average and difficult questions; there was no easy pick."
