IIM Shillong has been set up with a vision of expansion and mobilisation of facilities for offering good quality management education and research in the North Eastern region of India. The decision of coming up with an Indian Institute of Management in the North East was unanimously taken by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development along with the Chief Ministers of the North Eastern States in the Review Meeting held at Shillong during June 2004. Shillong was drafted as the permanent location for the institute after consultation between the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) and the Chief Ministers of States of the region. -

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry. During its initial years, several prominent faculty formed part of its nucleus, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, J. K. Sengupta, among others. IIM Indore which came into existence in 1998, was established as the sixth Indian Institute of Management. The Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi is the eighth Indian Institute of Management in the country. The session for the first batch of the college began from July 2010 and admissions took place through CAT 2009. The first batch consists of 44 students from diverse backgrounds like engineering, economics etc. The classes for the first batch of IIM Ranchi are being conducted in Soochna Bhavan, Ranchi before the students are finally moved to a permanent campus. IIM Calcutta is the mentor institute for IIM Ranchi. R.C Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti-Suzuki India Limited, has been appointed chairman of board of governors for the college.
