In 1993 the Department was brought into existence by amendment to IIT(D) statutes. Clearly, the Department responds to a felt need of the Indian Industry and derives satisfaction from its heavy field orientation in all its curriculum activity. In response to the feedback from the students, alumni and industry, the Department of Management Studies launched MBA programmes in 1997. The department currently runs a two year full time MBA programme with focus on Management Systems, a two year full time MBA with focus on Telecommunication Systems Management under the aegis of Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management and a three year part time MBA programme with focus on Technology Management.

Placement highlights
Department of Management Studies (IIT-Delhi) has completed its final placement for the 2010-12 batch with all the students getting lucrative offers from renowned companies including Deloitte, Accenture, Citi Bank, Tata Motors amongst other top recruiters.
While the highest domestic package offered at the campus was Rs 19 lakh per annum, the average salary stood at Rs 13.08 lakh.
Top recruiters this year included Deloitte Consulting (7), Accenture Consulting (5), Mitsui Japan (5), GE (5), Citibank (4), Tata Motors (4), P&G (3), American Express (2) amongst others.
Mitsui Chemicals offered the highest annual package of Rs 50 lakh for international placement.
The recruiters made a total of 113 offers to a batch of 97 students. One student, however, opted out of the placement process. Out of the 113 offers, 6 offers were made for placement abroad.
