You should not get worried if you have scored slightly low percentile around 80 in CAT 2016 as you still have good chances to get the call from 4-5 IIMs and can still apply to top non-IIMs with high placement record.

12000 in shortlist of 9 new IIMs: Academics play key to admission
For the PI-WAT round, the CAP 2017 participating 9 new IIMs propose to shortlist around 10000 to 12000 candidates for admission to their PGP 2017-19 batch with the same shortlisting parameters comprising overall and sectional minimum percentile scored in CAT 2016. The 9 new IIMs participating in CAP 2017 are IIM Rohtak, Ranchi, Raipur, Trichy, Kashipur, Udaipur, Amritsar, Bodh Gaya and Sambalpur.
Although almost all the new and newest IIMs propose to announce their shortlist with the criterion of CAT 2016 percentile score for Common Admission Process (CAP) 2017 to be held from Mid February to 1st week of March, your academics will come to your rescue if you have scored low in CAT 2016. It is expected that the candidates who have scored 80 percentile in CAT 2016 and have also scored 80% marks in class 10, 12 and bachelor’s degree stand a good chance to get admission in 13 new IIMs. Check New IIMs CAP 2017 process
IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Nagpur offer admission without PI round
3 Newest IIMs namely IIM Jammu, IIM Nagpur and IIM Sirmaur do not propose to conduct Personal Interview (PI) round and will offer direct admission to the candidates with CAT 2016 percentile, academics, work experience (If any). IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur mentored by IIM Lucknow propose to offer admission with a CAT 2016 score of around 80. Your performance in academics will play a key role in determining your final admission offer, as both these IIMs would not mind reducing their minimum qualifying score if you have excellent academic record. It is expected that IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur would shortlist around 1200 candidates for admission to PGP 2017-19 batch.
IIM Nagpur also did not conduct any PI round last year and is expected to offer admission to PGP 2017-19 with CAT 2016 score, past academic performance (PAP) and Work Experience (WE). The weightage to academic record goes as high as 30% at IIM Nagpur. Accordingly, if you have scored a little low in CAT 2016 but has excellent academic record, you may be the preferred candidate by IIM Nagpur. So, if shortlisted do remember to confirm and express your interest to IIM Nagpur when you receive the mail from this rising IIM which has successfully accomplished the summer and final placements for its earlier 2015-17 and 2016-18 batches. It may be noted that IIM Ahmedabad faculty are delivering lectures and imparting education at IIM Nagpur.
IIM Visakhapatnam: Academics replace low CAT score
The changed admission scenario at IIMs and the admission policy of IIM Visakhapatnam mentored by Bangalore proposes to conduct the WAT & PI round for admission to PGP 2017-19 batch. But the requirement of high percentile for admission to IIM Visakhapatnam could be compromised if you have excellent academics.
Clarifying the admission criteria, IIM Visakhapatnam says “Since IIMV follows a comprehensive multi-criteria process, it is able to identify many candidates who have an excellent academic record and work experience but who, while doing well enough in the CAT to be in the first shortlist, may have narrowly missed the high score that would have been required if CAT alone was the basis for admissions. Such candidates effectively replace candidates who have only a high CAT score but score poorly in terms of their past academic record and work experience. IIMV emphasizes consistent and high performance in past academics.”

The weightage and shortlisting criteria for these IIMs differ although there will be common final Personal Appearance (PA) round comprising Written Ability Test (WAT) & Personal Interview (PI).
Please also note and remain hopeful since you would be able to get an edge in the admission process of these 13 new IIMs over your peers if you have good academic record, work experience and also have academic & gender diversity. The 9 of 13 new IIMs have joined hands to go for Common Admission Process (CAP) to be co-ordinated by IIM Rohtak and have decided to accept the merit list generated after CAP 2017 but have declined to announce the common shortlist and have adopted to the process of announcing the individual shortlists despite having similar shortlisting criteria.
IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta shortlisted distinct candidates
IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong all have distinct shortlisting criteria. This fact enables different candidates to get shortlisted by these IIMs. A 100 percentiler may not necessarily be shortlisted by IIM Bangalore but he/she can sure be shortlisted by IIM Ahmedabad as per its shortlisting process of calculating the AR score.
IIM Ahmedabad has shortlisted 25192 candidates across different categories for subsequent stages but not the same candidates are shortlisted by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta although many of them have figured in the shortlists of these top IIMs.
