IIM Visakhapatnam: Summer placement over for 2nd batch; maintains 100% record with all paid internships

Summer Placement season for the second batch, PGP class of 2016-18 of the newest IIM Visakhapatnam successfully concluded with paid internships for all students

IIM Visakhapatnam, one of the newest IIMs, has again recorded 100% summer placement with all paid internships in variety of sectors and domains with different leading roles. Riding on the success of the Summer Placements of its first batch, wherein several students received PPOs/PPIs, the second summer placement process at IIM Visakhapatnam again received industry support with all 48 participating students receiving paid internships. One student opted out in order to pursue his own initiatives.

Among the 7 newest IIMs, IIM Visakhapatnam is the first to report the completion of summer placement for PGP 2016-18 class. Marketing, Strategy and General Management were among the dominant roles offered to the students. Other roles include Business Development, Sales, Corporate HR, and Operations. IIM Visakhapatnam will not participate in new IIMs CAP 2017 but will conduct its own PI-WAT process for PGP 2017-19 along with the mentor institute IIM Bangalore.

Top recruiters include HSBC, ICICI Lombard, Bosch, Cloudtail, Dr. Reddy's, Biocon and Sutherland Global Services. Companies like Directi, Sutherland, Furdo, Techfront were some of the recruiters who visited last year as well. Students secured internships in a wide range of domains including Marketing, General Management, Strategy, Finance, Operations and HR.

Domain wise break-up
Marketing was the most preferred domain to which 45.84% batch got placed for summer internship. Next was Strategy with 20.83% batch getting offers followed by General Management with 16.67%. Other domains include Operations with 8.33%; Finance, and Human Resources with 2.08% each and other domains with 4.17%.

Summer placement witnessed internships in following sectors – Technology, Banking, E-Commerce, Education, Education Technology, Government, Healthcare, Insurance, IT/BPO, Manufacturing, NGO, Operations, Pharmaceuticals and  Private Equity

Following were the key roles offered in summer placement to the students – Vendor Management, Business Analyst, Business Development, Digital Marketing, General Management, Human Resources, Market Research, Marketing Analyst, Marketing/Sales, Operations, Product Management, Research, Strategy.

2 processes for Summer placement at IIM Vizag
Summer placements at IIM Vizag happened under two processes. One process saw recruiters visiting the IIM Visakhapatnam campus for face-to-face interaction with students or conducting interviews over video-conferencing platforms. This was a rolling process and culminated in internship offers for 21 students.

For the other process, the students visited IIM Bangalore, the mentor institute for IIM Visakhapatnam and participated in IIM Bangalore’s summer placement process during the last week of October 2016. IIM Bangalore’s Placements Committee assisted the IIM Visakhapatnam students during the process and 27 students of the batch secured internship offers in this process.

Recruiters that offered variety of roles
The recruiters comprised reputed finance companies, such as HSBC and ICICI Lombard, who together offered 4 roles across business intelligence, operations, and sales. Engineering and electronics multinational Bosch offered internships to 5 candidates for their general management profile. Sutherland Global Services offered internships to 3 students. Amazon India’s largest merchant, Cloudtail, recruited one student for their vendor management role.

Multinational pharmaceuticals giant Dr. Reddy’s and biotechnology major Biocon also participated in the process and made 4 offers across corporate HR and marketing profiles.

Government of Andhra Pradesh recruited students for their prestigious internship programs across departments like Vision Management and Higher Education.

The season also witnessed interest from start-ups across various sectors—ePathshala, Edutel Technologies, and Next Education in the education sector; mSupply and 4tigo catering to supply chain and fleet management respectively; Uber Diagnostics in the healthcare sector; and Awesummly in the media sector.

Other major recruiters included Forum Synergies (Bengaluru-based PE firm) and Rakshak Foundation (a Non-Government Organization dealing in public policy).

IIM Visakhapatnam is the first among the 7 newest IIMs that started operation in 2015-16 to achieve the summer placement for the entire batch consecutively for the second year. None of the other newest IIMs have reported any placement so far for the second batch.

The conclusion of summer placement at IIM Visakhapatnam for its second batch has raised hope among the aspirants and for those who were in a dilemma whether to join IIM Visakhapatnam vis-à-vis other comparatively old IIMs that they can now take a clear decision to join the IIMV.

G. Janaki Ramachandram, Head, Academic Programmes and Administration, IIM Visakhapatnam has commented on excellent summer placement “ Recruiters have been very appreciative of the quality of our students in terms of the knowledge they possess and the questions raised during their interactions.”

An obviously jubilant Abhishek Goel, Placement Representative, IIM Visakhapatnam said “The current first-year batch rose to the challenge of getting summer internships with their in-depth preparedness, and left a lasting impression on the recruiters.”

IIM Visakhapatnam came into being in 2015 as one of the 6 IIMs announced in the Union Budget 2014. While 5 of the 6 IIMs got finalized in the Budget 2014, the fate of IIM Visakhapatnam took the final shape in the Budget 2015 till then it remained a Government Ordinance entity. IIM Bangalore is the mentor IIM to IIM Visakhapatnam. The temporary campus at IIM Visakhapatnam doesn’t have on campus hostel accommodation and candidates of the first batch were accomodated to off campus hostel accommodation.

Classes at IIM Visakhapatnam are held at the temporary premises allotted to it at Andhra University campus and will continue at the temporary campus till the 300 acre campus of IIM Visakhapatnam gets ready.

IIM Visakhapatnam is yet to announce the shortlist of candidates for the final admission round comprising WAT and PI. The minimum qualifying CAT 2016 percentile cut off as announced by IIMV for the shortlist is 90.
