The only way to choose the right B-school is to first know the facts, fee, legacy, placement, analyse the USPs of the MBA programme and then proceed

Top B-schools have published their shortlists for GD-PI-WAT rounds for admission to MBA/PGDM 2017-19 while a few are about to announce them. With many MBA options available and after appearing and scoring well in CAT 2016; XAT 2017; CMAT 2017 and getting shortlisted by number of B-schools it becomes tough to arrive at the right decision.

It has become more imperative to take a decision where to go before investing huge amount of money to pursue the management course from your dream B school.

How would you come to know before-hand whether the particular MBA/PGDM programme of a particular B-school will equip you with all the great learning and career opportunities for which MBA is renowned? The only way to choose the right B-school is to first know the facts, fee, legacy, placement, analyse the USPs of the MBA programme and then proceed for the comparison with other B-schools and choose the most appropriate among them.

Check your Options
The very 1st thing is to go through the available options with you. If you have been shortlisted by IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, new IIMs along with SPJIMR, MDI, the decision taking out of such close options is tough but at the same time you need to wait for the final merit list which will take another one month. All these above top B-schools accept CAT scores except SPJIMR which accepts CAT & XAT scores.

XAT 2017 has also offered good options with top B-schools XLRI, IMT, SPJIMR, TAPMI, XIMB among others accepting the scores. If you have been shortlisted by some of the top B-schools accepting XAT scores, it would be worth waiting for the final merit list.

CMAT 2017 exam scores are also accepted by some of the top B-schools like GIM Goa, Great Lakes, IFMR among others and if you are shortlisted by one of them, it can serve to be a good option for pursuing your MBA.

4 parameters to take decision
We recommend the following 4 parameters that will guide you in arriving at the decision

  • Legacy
  • Fee structure
  • Average placement
  • Location

The situation becomes pressurizing when you are selected by more than 1 highly ranked B-schools and the difficulty is faced in choosing the right MBA/PGDM programme. It’s therefore high time to give a thought which one to choose out of the preferred B schools.

Legacy: Old is gold
The truth that Old is Gold has not yet gone wrong when deciding on the B-schools. The legacy not only reflects its position on placement year after year but also proves the sustainability and growth of the institute over a period of time. The learning experience from well learned experienced faculty is another advantage that students of an older B-school get according to changing market trends.

The older the B-school, higher is its alumni base that leads to great placement. How true it is, you will know simply by comparing the 20 IIMs where the older ones complete their placements very early with high salary packages and newer ones remain way behind the process. FMS Delhi the oldest B-school offering MBA has a legacy of more than 60 years. Its alumni base is spread all over the world. Candidates get placed within a few days when campus placement starts. Same can be said about MDI, IMI, IMT, BIMTECH, SPJIMR, TAPMI among others.

Fee structure
If you have to pay Rs.20 lakhs to pursue MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, you may go for it despite bearing the burden of education loan from a bank, but if you have to pay Rs.15 lakhs even to a 3rd or 4th tier B-school, which is yet to prove its standing, you may be the last person to think about it. A moderate fee structure with good placement that can assure you about your career prospects is what you might be looking for.

It will be better to compare the fee structures of different B-schools and the benefits of learning arising out of it before finalizing your MBA admission decision.

Average Placement
In fact MBA aspirants move one step forward and take 2 steps back whether they should invest lakhs of Rupees to study MBA where Return on investment may not be so good. There are number of B schools who have better corporate interface than many IIMs and over the years have built up a reputation of offering good return on investment. The placement data is also available on their site. You may check before taking admission decision to the preferred B school.

The future of MBA job market has already started showing upward trends. Almost all the good B-schools like IIMs, FMS, JBIMS, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI, IMI, IMT, GIM Goa, Great Lakes, MICA, XIMB among others have claimed a hike of 15 to 25% in highest and average salary offered by recruiters to their students in placement 2016 and 2017.

The trend started from 2016 has picked up further in placement 2017 despite the increase in number of students seeking placement in top rated B-schools.

With admission process still open in many of the B-schools, it is advisable to choose the right one and make sure that you apply in time to avoid disappointment in admission.

Location
Location of the B-school is very important factor that contributes in taking the decision to choose the right MBA college. If the B-school is located in the unaccessible area, not preferred by corporate for placements, less industry interface is there, it will be difficult for the students to gain good practical experience on management education.

It is therefore of utmost importance to take decision with the help of all the above 4 parameters and checking out the available options depending upon the exam scores obtained by you.
