Understand the FMS Delhi Extempore speech round
Extempore speech at FMS Delhi will precede the Personal Interview. Through the Extempore speech, FMS Delhi tests you on speaking skills, very much needed to groom leadership qualities in you before offering you admission.

Unlike the GD round which used to form the FMS Delhi Admission criteria earlier, the component of extempore speech is quite different. Instead of any Group Discussion among 8-10 candidates on some topic, FMS Delhi Extempore speech round targets one candidate at a time. The candidate who is going for Personal Interview needs to speak for a few minutes on any random topic before the panelists who are interviewing him.

The process and weightage of Extempore speech in FMS Delhi final admission round is shared below-

-- Extempore speech at FMS Delhi is the oration test in PI round and is to be delivered just before the Personal interview begins

-- FMS Delhi will give you any random topic either before beginning the personal interview or during the course of interaction by the panelists who are conducting interview

-- You will be given about 10-15 seconds to think on the topic and the candidate will then have to speak for about 2-3 minutes on the topic

-- FMS Delhi admission criteria give you 5% weightage overall to extempore speech and 33% in PI round. While FMS Delhi gives a weightage of 10% to Personal interview, a weightage of 5% is awarded by FMS Delhi to Extempore speech.

Why there is Extempore round at FMS Delhi?
FMS Delhi has replaced the GD round by Extempore speech as per the requirement of recruiting industry. According to Dr M L Singla, Dean FMS Delhi “It is primarily done to ensure diversity of the Academic Disciplines as is the demand of recruiting industry too. This will help candidates have a balance of intellectual quotient and communication dexterity.”

The main objective of FMS Delhi by removing the GD round and replacing it with Extempore speech is to assess the candidate with his quick & positive thought process. The extempore speech at FMS Delhi is the test of speaking skill.

Clarity of thought and logical and coherent speech relevant to the topic is the key to score full marks in extempore. Whether you grasp the core of the topic and can speak without beating about the bush reaffirms your future managerial ability as a team leader.

According to the CAT toppers who got admission in FMS Delhi, if you wish to score maximum in extempore round of FMS Delhi admission process, you have to organize the thoughts before speaking and should not go wayward as it will give the impression that you are trying to befool the panelists by passing the time only.

Tips to crack Extempore at FMS Delhi
Making good use of the opportunity in ‘Extempore’ depends upon the speaking style, thought process and content. Extempore speech is used as a very distinguishing feature of FMS Delhi selection process, the weightage to extempore is 5% on a scale of 100 and scoring full 5 is not difficult also.

One of the senior faculty members and panellist in FMS admission process emphasizes the importance of extempore by saying ‘other than the fluency of articulation, choice of words, panelists look for evidence of a creative mind and capacity to think on one's feet.’ In order to be sure about the 'quality' of the candidate, panel might even give a second extempore topic.

Don’t neglect current GD/WAT topics
Whether it is Extempore speech, Written Ability Test (WAT) or Group Discussion (GD), the topics could be the same with slight difference on emphasizing part. If you get a GD topic on Demonetization, you can also get it in your WAT and for FMS Delhi Extempore speech, so don’t think that a WAT or GD topic may not be a topic for Extempore in FMS Delhi.

Go through as many past topics as you can, read them and prepare a speech outline with rich facts and speak before your friends, family members and before mirror also. This will boost your confidence level.

Update your knowledge on surroundings
Panelists hardly ever check any testimonials or documents while assessing you through the Extempore & PI round. The panel makes assessment of the candidate on the basis of his/her awareness and way of communicating the ideas & thoughts coherently and with relevance to the topic.

It is advisable to be aware of your surroundings, subject knowledge and avoid speaking with any misleading or superfluous points, ideas, media reports among other things.

Experts and panellists at FMS consistently associated with PI round share that each candidate is actually carefully assessed by using years of experience in sitting through such interviews. Hence any bluff can be well judged by the panellists.

Use your own ideas
Coached speeches with irrelevant or obsolete data or quotes do more harm than good at Extempore speech, avoid them. Most of such coached extempore speeches and behaviours in Extempore and PI round are viewed as acting which jeopardize your chance to be at FMS Delhi since all charms wear off when an amateur actor appears as a poor caricature of someone else.

The panel is essentially looking for quality of thought process and natural leadership behaviour, any artificial or mugged up participation will draw negative attention and fail to impress the assessors who are well experienced.

Be cool & gather your thoughts first
Avoid getting worried about extempore at FMS Delhi Admission round. Knowing extempore topics given to other candidates by FMS panelists do not help much as the Extempore topics are not repeated. If you have forgot something and wish to recall, ask for it else saying that you have forgot or you do not know more on the topic can be of better help.

But in any case do not get panicky, irritating and never lose your cool. Not knowing the topic may not do any harm but losing your cool can sure do. You can request the FMS Delhi panellists for an alternate topic also.

Extempore forms the base of PI
Most of the times the PI round at FMS Delhi begins either with the 'views' expressed during the 'extempore' or with a discussion around one's bio-data given in the application form. So focus on them
