IIM Ahmedabad announces fee hike on sidelines of Convocation 2017; Shikha Sharma, CEO Axis Bank delivers Convocation address

IIM Ahmedabad has announced the fee hike to Rs.21 lakhs on the occasion of celebration of its 52nd Convocation on March 25

On the occasion of the celebration day on March 25, of its 52nd Convocation which witnessed award of Post Graduate Diplomas to 554 students and Convocation address delivered by the Chief Guest, Shikha Sharma CEO of Axis Bank and a 1980 batch IIM-A alumna, IIM Ahmedabad has also decided to increase its programme fee by Rs.1.5 lakhs

For the second year in a row Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has announced to increase the fee for its PGDM programmes. The Fee was increased in the year 2016 to Rs.19.5 lakhs and now it has again been hiked to Rs.21 lakhs effective from the academic year 2017-18.

Announcing the decision on the day of 52nd Convocation of the premier B-school, Prof Ashish Nanda, Director IIM Ahmedabad  said “We have revised the fees for the PGP courses to ₹21 lakh for two years.” Prof Nanda further informed that IIM Ahmedabad Board of Governors has approved the fee increase.

Fee hike continues for 2nd successive year
IIM Ahmedabad had the fee structure of Rs. 18.5 lakhs in 2015. The fee was increased by Rs. 1lakh to Rs.19.5 lakhs in 2016. Now with effect from 2017 IIM Ahmedabad has again increased the programme fee to Rs.21 lakhs for PGP in Management and PGP in Food & Agribusiness Management.

Intake not increased
No increase in seats in any of the flagship post graduate programmes is proposed by IIM Ahmedabad in the academic year 2017-18. However, IIM Ahmedabad will have 2 sections for its PGPX (one year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives) programme.

With the stand on intake made clear by the Director IIM Ahmedabad, we may not expect the top IIMs to increase the intake in 2017-18 as announced by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister of HRD, Govt. of India after meeting the directors of IIMs in September 2016.

1/3rd students to get financial aid
According to Prof Nanda, “Financial aid for deserving students will continue as before. The number of such students is about one-third of our class.”

2 Centres at Delhi & Mumbai proposed

IIM Ahmedabad proposes to set up 2 engagement centres in Delhi and Mumbai. These centres would comprise a small classroom for running short-term executive education programmes, apart from providing incubation facilities to local start-ups

According to Prof Ashish Nanda, Director IIM Ahmedabad “What we are planning to do is have engagement centres such as in Mumbai and Delhi. It will be a place where one classroom can conduct an executive education programme, apart from providing some support to entrepreneurs through incubation facilities and gathering place for alumni and local people.”

Be careful on your choice: Convocation address by Shikha Sharma
In her Convocation address as the Chief Guest at IIM Ahmedabad, Shikha Sharma, CEO Axis Bank advised the graduating batch to ‘make such choice that should maximize your potential.’ Adding further she said, “Every time you decide to take the harder but more principled path, you add one more brick to the foundation of your character.”

Delivering the Convocation speech Shikha Sharma emphasised "It is our time as a nation to regain our fair share of global economic production, of trade, of arts, culture, innovation. As graduates of the Well Known Institute of Management in Western India – IIM Ahmedabad, it is incumbent upon you to lead from the front in building our nation. Whether you plan to join a multi-billion dollar firm or seed a start up, you form the talent engine that the India story is depending on."

Time to learn the ‘Art of Management’: Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman BoG, IIM-A
Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman Board of Governors (BoG) IIM Ahmedabad and chairman of Aditya Birla Group advised the graduating students not to let the process of learning and discovery stop. Mr Birla said “In the days and years to come, if you look at your workplace as your continuing MBA, you will keep expanding your horizon. What you have learnt here is the science of management which, however, is only one aspect of the learning curve. Going forward, you will have to start practicing the Art of Management."

He asked the students to be ready for a “ferocious change” happening in the world and said “Teamwork is the ultimate mantra. Individualism is essential to bring in the diversity of thoughts, but teamwork ensures organisational effectiveness.”
