MAT May 2017 Exam pattern

MAT question paper in May MAT 2017 exam contained objective type with Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). The test paper was divided in 5 sections.

The 5 test sections in MAT 2017 May exam were Language Comprehension, Mathematical skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Indian and Global Environment.

Score and percentile in MAT exam was awarded on the basis of 4 sections. The score of Indian & Global Environment was separately shown in the score card but has not been not taken into account to calculate the merit or percentile score in May MAT 2017.

Each of the 5 sections in MAT question paper had 40 questions making it a total of 200 questions in MCQ format to be solved in 150 minutes. Individual time limit for each section was also suggested by AIMA although candidates could move from one section to other in the May MAT 2017 exam.

Key trends in MAT May 2017 scoring pattern

The marking pattern in May MAT 2017 exam as advised by AIMA was as shared below:

Number of answer options per question 4
Maximum Marks per question 1
Negative Marking 0.25 mark for every wrong answer
Total maximum raw score 200
Total maximum raw score for percentile calculation 160 (Score of Indian & Global Environment section not included in percentile calculation)
Total maximum scaled score out of which percentile score will be awarded 800 (score of 160 for 4 sections scaled to 800)

However, the sectional and composite scores awarded in May MAT 2017 exam reveal a unique trend. It could be due to higher or lower difficulty level or due to the fact that candidates paid more or less attention to the preparation of particular section.

The candidates who have obtained a scaled score of above 76-77 in section-1 have been awarded a percentile above 99. Those who have got scaled score of more than 99 in section-2 have been awarded a percentile of above 99 in second section. For example Tuhin scored 99.72 in section-2, he was awarded a percentile of 99.76; Debajit scored 99.74 and has been awarded a percentile of 99.8. So the scaled score and percentile score in section-2 have moved very close to each other.

Same pattern for 99 and percentile in section-3 followed. However, the gap between scaled score and percentile score got widened when it came below 99 percentile in section-3. For example Shirsendu has got a scaled score of 82.82 and was awarded percentile score of 98.93 in section-3.

The section-4 on Reasoning was more difficult in MAT May 2017 exam as there is a gap of more than 20 points between the scaled score and percentile score. At a scaled score of only 66.63 a percentile of 93.76 and at a scaled score of 74.08, the percentile of 98.63 was awarded in section-4 in May MAT 2017 exam.

The scoring pattern in section-5 on Indian and Global environment (GK section) reveals that candidates either did not attempt many questions in this section or did not prepare well for it. The basic reason behind it is that this section is not taken into account for percentile calculation. Except Vipul who has scored 70+ in this section, none other has been able to achieve a scaled score of even 60 in this section.
