From battle ground to board room: Armed forces officers at MDI programme find corporate takers

Officers of armed forces who are under going the six-month management course for Defence officers at MDI, Gurgaon are attracting leading corporate recruiters.

While the current management program for the armed forces has still a fortnight to conclude, leading companies like Tata Motors, Cadilla, Reliance, Idea Cellular, Tata NDPL, ICICI, Genpact, Ericsson, Infosys have thronged the MDI campus to woo officers with fat pay packets.

According to MDI, the pay packages range from Rs 12 to Rs 18 lakhs.

These ex-army officers are successfully reorienting themselves after their retirements from the Army, Navy and the Air Force.

These new corporate warriors want to enhance their skill set and to be adequately equipped before taking a plunge into the corporate world. “More and more defence personnel are yearning to join the corporate world. In defence, one gets superannuated at the age of 53-54. The corporate world is alive and kicking till the age of 65," said Brigadier V.S. Gulia, the placement coordinator for 24 weeks course at MDI, Gurgaon. 

Brigadier Gulia stressed, the officers in armed forces are already adequately trained in the corporate arena like logistics, supply chain, inventory and HR management, and therefore the transition after a full time course at MDI becomes easy.

It is a win-win situation for both corporates and there officers. The companies are also benefitted as they can afford to utilize this accumulated on the job experience which comes packaged with honesty, integrity, reliability, and decision making ability without any biases and leading team from the front.
