CAT topper with 98.67 percentile and IIM Calcutta student of PGP 2018-20 batch, Medha Gupta had no time to join any coaching and preferred self preparation instead of joining some coaching although she made it a point to join the CAT Mock test series offered by the coaching institute. Medha suggests to improve your basics first instead of getting into the advanced level of topics immediately.

Medha is a B-Tech in CSE from IIT Ropar. She had earned 3 years experience as a software developer at PayPal before joining IIM Calcutta with a score of 98.67 percentile in CAT 2017.

Medha belongs to Kanpur and her father runs a business of recycling waste material into usable cardboard sheets used in corrugation industries. Her mother is a housewife and her elder brother is a software engineer at Microsoft.

Sharing with MBAUniverse.com, Medha highlights her experience in preparation journey to CAT and modestly attempts to give the ‘success mantra’ to the CAT 2018 aspirants

MBAUniverse.com: What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT?
Medha: I concentrated on basics first, took a mock regularly and analysed after getting results. Worked on my weak areas which was DI/LR in later phases. Solved as many questions as I could.

MBAUniverse.com: Please share your preparation strategy for VARC Section in CAT
Medha: I read the Hindu daily, specially the editorial section, read a lot of reading comprehesions. I basically tried to increase my reading speed.

MBAUniverse.com: How did you prepare for Quantitative Ability (QA) Section in CAT?
Medha: I Solved as many quant questions as I could. Regularly solved sectional tests and timed myself.

MBAUniverse.com: What was your preparation strategy for DILR Section?
Medha: I solved as many questions as I could. Regularly solved sectional tests and timed myself.

MBAUniverse.com: Was there any particular section/area that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
Medha: I was weak at DILR. I tried to understand the patterns on which questions were asked in CAT. Practised regularly with those patterns and solved as many mocks as I could.

MBAUniverse.com: What role did Mocks play in your success? How many mocks did you attempt before the exam?
Medha: Mocks were extremely useful as they helped me analyse my weak areas. I solved around 30 mocks before the exam.

MBAUniverse.com: Did you self-prepare or attend a coaching centre?
Medha: I self prepared, because I already knew the basics and I wanted to concentrate more on practice.

MBAUniverse.com: Please share your strategy for the CAT Day. What was your last-minute preparation? How did you plan your CAT test taking?
Medha: I relaxed before the test, and just went through the basic notes. Its best to relax during the exam as it helps to give your best performance.
