On March 29, delivering his first address as the director of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM A), Dr S K Barua said, "The year 2007-08 has been one of transition, one of consolidation as well as one of growth."

Dr Barua took over as the director from Dr Bakul Dholakia in November 2007. In his address, Dr Barua highlighted the performance of various programmes offered by the institute, particularly PGP and PGPX programmes.

Talking about the flagship Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), Dr Barua said, "In the last year, PGP continued its dominant position as the top ranked programme in the country and as among the best such programme in the Asia-pacific region. The programme witnessed record placements despite slowdown in the US and other major economies."

Dr Barua laid emphasis on the growing stature of the one-year Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX). "There are clear indications from the quality of applications received for the next batch and the interest shown by the recruiters in the graduating batch that the programme is on its way to establishing itself as one of the finest programme of its kind in the world," said Dr Barua. Bullish about the future prospects of the programme, Dr Basu said, "I am certain that in another two years, after the programme is eligible for ranking, it would be ranked among the best programme globally."

IIM A is also espousing international accreditation for better visibility. Said Dr Barua, "Peer Review Team for EQUIS accreditation visited us last year. While we firmly believe that the institute needs no certificate of quality, this certification done by EFMD is useful for attracting global attention and also for global ranking." According to Dr Barua, the review team left impressed by efforts put in by IIM-A.

In 2007-8, one of the special event worthy of mention was the address by The Dalai Lama, under the Institute's Lecture Series, said Dr Barua. He spoke on the topic of 'Ethics in Business'.

To the graduating students, Dr Barua said, "As you step out as graduates of the institute, I would like to remind you that as alumni of IIM A you have acquired iconic status is society. I would urge you to make a difference to the majority of the people in the world who still remain untouched by the fruits of development."
