While the six-month program was earlier planned for once in a year, IIM-A has now agreed to conduct the program twice a year.
The program aims at providing management education to officers of the Indian Armed Forces, whether in short commission or regular commission, who are due to retire shortly or have retired recently. The objective? To help officers from all three services – Army, Air Force and Navy-- in their rehabilitation in civil life after their retirement. (Management training was identified as their key preference.)
The first program – that was specially designed by IIM-A at the behest of the Directorate General of Resettlement, Ministry of Defence (DGR-MoD), and Government of India -- will be over by mid-March (the first batch was inducted in October 2006), and the second one will commence from April 2007.
In the first batch, there were 60 participants; and now, 66 officers have been identified for the second batch.This full-time residential program is broadly divided into three terms. In the first two terms, the participants are offered 17 core courses in various functional areas such as Economics, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Organizational Behavior, Costing, etc. These courses are compulsory for all participants. In the last term, they are offered elective courses in the specific areas of their interest. In addition to classroom teaching, industrial visits and guest lectures are also integrated.
