Q- What is the importance of 'preparation' for a candidate wanting to crack management entrance exams like CAT, XAT and others? How important was preparation in your personal journey to your campus?

A- Preparing for such exams is of utmost importance because here you just don't have to score well but beat others and succeed. So you just cannot lose on any ground and these preparations help you gain that competitive edge.

Career Launcher was of great help for me as it helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses. I could build on my strengths and work hard on the weaknesses. Its mock tests were like real life simulation of the D-day. Later they helped me in and out with their GD and PI sessions which is the reason why I am here finally, i.e. FMS.

Q- How did you prepare for management entrance exams like CAT, XAT and other exams? Please elaborate.

A- Ever since I entered my college life, I had decided that I would be doing MBA. But then no institute use to provide a 3 year training programme for students like me. So I enrolled in IIPS, a franchisee of Career Launcher, wherein though I was a student of IIPS yet I got the faculty and study material of Career Launcher. Later on when I entered my final year of graduation, I finally became an official student of Career Launcher.

Apart from the study material that CL used to provide, I use to read management compass, a publication of CL regularly and I did read Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis. My newspaper reading habits were sporadic but I never missed the sports section!!

Q- Did you enroll into a coaching or test-prep institute? How did it help?

A- As discussed above I enrolled in IIPS and then Career Launcher and it was of great help to me. I cannot imagine now how I could have cracked these exams if I didn't have their support.

Q- How should an aspirant choose the right test-prep institute? What should be the parameters for making this choice?

A- Parameters for choosing a test-prep institute would be:

  • Faculty
  • Study Material
  • Mock Test (Number and Quality)
  • Student Base
  • Location (Ideally it should be near to your home)

Q- How is life in a top B-school from a student's point of view? What the some highs and lows!

A- Life in a top B-school is very different from what a normal life is supposed to be and from what people perceive it to be. Life at FMS is not all about studies. Studies are an integral but not the only part of your life. Live-projects and competitions are of more importance. One gets to learn more from the faculties than from the books. Life at FMS is all about taking initiatives and doing what you feel like whether it is organizing events, or participating in competitions or gymming or dancing or guitar. One gets to learn every single day. In short life at FMS is very exciting. The lows about life in a B-school are that you stay away from your family and hardly get any time to even talk to them. So this is a negative but then one has to compromise for Road to CAT '08 special series will continue on India's leading management portal – MBAUniverse.com. Stay tuned to read more Chats with MBAs, expert admission advice from B-school Directors and from top test-prep experts.
