The recently graduated Class of 2008 at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) has left behind a legacy of sorts.

As part of the "Building IIM-B for Tomorrow" initiative, undertaken by the students and faculty to further strengthen the brand IIM-B, the 2006-08 Batch of students have set up the Class of 2008 Fund. The fund will be used for instituting faculty and student excellence awards as well as for supporting infrastructural developments on campus. This is the first time ever a graduating batch has made such an effort as a sign of their commitment to the growth and development of the institute.

Gautham Krishnan, one of the students involved in this exercise said, "The motivation to undertake something like this comes with the realization that it is time that we as students gave something back to the institute." He said that while the alumni made significant contributions from time to time towards the development of the institute it was the responsibility of the students as well to do their bit now according to their capacity and not several years later as alumni only.

180 students out of the batch of 261 donated voluntarily to the Class of 2008 fund out of their caution deposits, a refundable amount deposited with the institute at the time of admission. A total of Rs 12 lakhs was collected and has been put under the safeguard of this fund, which will have signatories from amongst the students as well as senior administration.

This effort received praise from the chairman of the board of governors of IIM Bangalore Mr. Mukesh Ambani and the Director Prof. Pankaj Chandra. Both commended the leadership demonstrated by the outgoing batch during their convocation address at the institute in March this year.

"Building IIMB for Tomorrow" is an initiative that includes several other endeavours made by the students as well like a case writing programme and interest group discussions between students and faculty.

As a new batch of post graduate programme students get their feet wet in their first  term at IIM Bangalore, they have the perfect example set by their seniors for them to follow in making one of the best business schools of the country even better.
