Industry leaders, policy makers and international experts to address skills deficit issue at CII Summit

Given the shortage of skilled manpower in fast growing sectors like Banking, Retail, Healthcare, Construction, Automotive sector and several other sectors, there is increased need for understanding the importance of Skills Development in India.

To address the challenges and opportunities in the area, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will be holding the Global Summit on Skill Development on September 17-18, 2008 in New Delhi. India's first portal on employability development – EmployablityUniverse.com – is the official media partner of the summit.

The two-day summit will see host of national & global speakers from Government, Industry, Academia, Multi-lateral Agencies, etc. The Summit shall be attended by Senior Industry representatives & experts from Australia, Germany, US, China, Korea, Singapore, New Zealand and Britain. Together they will offer perspectives on bridging the skill divide & sharing international best practices. Australia is the partner country for the Summit.

The Day 1 of the summit will have sessions on Global Practices in Skills, Engaging Stakeholders-Delivering through PPP, Universalizing Skills - From Policy to Practice where senior representatives from both industry & government shall discuss the skills needs for the country. Day 2 will have focused discussion on Sectoral Skills needs & the role of industry. The Sessions that will be covered this year are Automotive, Construction, Health, Retail & Financial Services.

On Day 1, the welcome address will be delivered by Mr. B Santhanam, Chairman, CII Skills, HR & IR/ER Committee & MD Saint-Gobain Glass India Limited. Ms. Sudha Pillai, Secretary (Labour & Employment) Government of India; Mr. Jim Davidson, Deputy Secretary, Dept. of Education, Employment & Work Relations, Australia; Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General Confederation of Indian Industry are some of the other key speakers at the summit. The inaugural address will be delivered by Mr. Oscar Fernandes, Chief Guest Minister of State (Labour & Employment) Independent Charge Government of India. The Plenary session will focus on Australia – Global Leaders in VET Initiatives.

Other sessions on Day 1 of the summit will focus on topics like 'understanding of the Industry – Institute – Government partnership models', 'developing a national skills agenda with the industry & civil society initiatives', 'Public – Private Partnership for skills development' The speakers will include Mr. Roy Newey, Group Board Director, A4e UK Ltd.; Ms. Sabine Gummersbach, Director iMOVE, Germany; Mr. Mike Dawe, Head of Development Policy and Institute Affairs, City & Guilds Centre for Skills Development, UK; Ms. Donna Murphy, Managing Director, Adecco Institute, USA; Mr. Adrian Wüest, Project Manager, Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology, Switzerland, Mr. Vijay Thadani, Chairman CII Education Committee & Chief Executive Officer NIIT Limited; Mr. Ravi Pillai, Country Head, City & Guilds (South Asia), Ms. Jayati Chandra, Senior Adviser, Planning Commission, Government of India, Ms. Akiko Sakamoto, Skills Specialist, ILO; Mr. Sharda Prasad, Director General Employment & Training, Government of India, Mr. Manish Sabharwal, Prof. Krishna Vedula, Dean Emeritus, University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Day 2 of the Summit will focus on discussions on high sectors like financial services, retail, healthcare, automobile and construction.

The opening session will be chaired by Mr. P.K. Choudhury, Vice Chairman & Group CEO, ICRA. Other speakers include Dr. Amar Singh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India, Ms. Suzi Hewlett, Branch Manager Industry Engagement, DEEWR, Australia, Mr. Wilfried Telkämper, Director, InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany; Dr. Pim Borren, Chief Executive, Waiariki Institute of Technology, New Zealand

1030 – 1100– Automobile, Construction, Financial, Health, Retail

Session on Automobile sector will host speakers like Mr. Prince Augustin, Senior VP, M&M; Prof Narendranath Akhouri, Professor, IMI; Ms. Vaishali Ahuja, General Manager Human Resources, BMW; Mr. Devdutta Chandavarkar, Director - After Sales, Mercedes Benz India Pvt. Ltd and Mr. Anders N. Jensen, Jt. Managing Director, MAN Diesel India Limited.

Session on Construction sector will be facilitated by Mr. J Ganguly, Executive Vice President, Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (ECC Division). Other speaker on the panel include Mr. Michael Schwartzkopff, InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany; Mr. Srinivasan Iyer, CEO, Mpower Business Facilitators Limited and Ms. Kareena Ballard, Chair, Construction & Property Services Skills Council, Australia.

The session on Financial Services will have Mr. Raja Parthasarthy, Managing Director, IDFC Pvt. Equity as the facilitator. Ms. Rita Soni, Country Head, Yes Bank; Dr. Rakesh Khurana, Chairman, KNI and Mr. John Vines, Chair, Innovation and Business Skills, Australia are other speakers.

Session on Health sector will be facilitated by Dr Ajit K Nagpal, Chairman Executive Council, Batra Hospital & Medical Research Centre. Dr. Shubnum Singh, Chief Medical Affairs (External), Max Healthcare; Mr. Deepak Bhandari, Chairman, EPOS Healthcare; Mr. Pim Borren, Chief Executive, Waiariki Institute of Technology, New Zealand and Mr. Dan Hill, Chair, Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council, Australia are other speaker.

Session on Retail sector will be facilitated by Mr. Navin Bhatia, COO Bharti Airtel, Mr. Ajay Mehra, CEO Edvance Learning Pvt. Ltd; Mr. Hari Abburi, Vice President - HR, Bharti Retail; Ms. Mukul Rastogi, Vice President - HR, ITC Ltd. and Mr. Manish K Jar, CEO, Idea 7 Automotive are other speakers.

This year's Summit theme is Celebrating Vishwakarma Divas – The National Labour Day of India - which is celebrated by technicians across the country. The day is celebrated by all workers including blacksmiths, Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, Musicians, etc. CII has aligned the Global summit on Skills Development 2008 with this important day to recognize the unorganized sector & make skills development inclusive, enhance Respect for Labour and bring Social appreciation to all skills.

On the occasion, CII will also be releasing a 'Blue Book on ITIs, 5 Sector Reports.' An exhibition of skills training providers and practioners is also organised parallel to the Summit. iMOVE Germany is the Exhibition Partner & shall be bringing in a strong contingent of German Exhibitors.
