Joint Management Entrance Test or JMET 2009, the gateway to the prestigious seven Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) B-schools and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore's Department of Management Studies, will be conducted on December 14, 2008.

Given the increase in time duration, PT Education, one of the leading MBA test prep companies, is expecting a tougher exam paper this year.

When asked how PT Education looks at the last year's paper, Mr. Subhashish Mitra, VP Academics, PT Education, said, "Last year, the paper was one of moderate toughness level wherein an attempt of around 65+ out of 150 was possible for those well prepared. Considering that the questions in the Verbal Communication, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation sections were of a "comfortable" level, a reasonably high accuracy was expected in these sections. The Quants section was tough, but unlike predictions, there were not too many Higher Math questions."

How does PT Education look at JMET 2009? Says Mr Mitra, "The declared pattern for JMET 2009 says that the paper will be of 3 hours duration and there would be 120 questions. Looking at the increased time and reduced number of questions, the first thought is that the paper would be tougher. Maybe we can expect a higher proportion of Higher Mathematics questions this time around along with complex Reasoning and calculation intensive Data Interpretation questions - all designed to slow down the student."

The structure of the exam will undergo changes this year, according to IIT Kanpur. This year this written management entrance exam will be conducted by IIT Kanpur. According to IIT Kanpur, JMET 2009 will be of 3 hours duration. The test will consist of 120 questions including objective & multiple choice type in Verbal Communication, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation areas. Earlier the test was two hours long with 150 questions where the sections were same.

Offering his advice to JMET takers, Mr Mitra said, "Our advice to the students taking the JMET would be to first focus on obtaining the sectional cut-offs in each section - between 20 and 25% of the alloted marks in each section - and then try and maximise any one / two sections that they find themselves comfortable in. Out of 120 marks (we are assuming uniform marking pattern) and assuming a tough paper, an overall score of around 45-50 should be very comfortable."

The Schools/ Departments that use JMET 2009 scores are:

IIT Bombay: Shailesh J Mehta School of Management

IIT Delhi: Department of Management Studies

IIT Kanpur: Department of industrial & Management Engineering

IIT Kharagpur: Vinod Gupta School of Management

IIT Madras: Department of Management Studies

IIT Roorkee: Department of Management Studies
