Flashback: IIM C 'Class of 1983' revisits campus

IIM Calcutta hosted its annual alumni meet on December 28 and 29, 2009 at its Joka campus. This year witnessed the home coming of the 1983 batch, which was also the 18th batch, of IIM Calcutta.

IIM C informed MBAUniverse.com that 48 alumni from the 1983 batch of 105, some with their families and around 70 alumni of the various other batches attended the two day long festivities on the campus.  

The two day celebration offered a diverse menu of events and interactions including performances, plays, student-faculty-alumni interactions, parties. Sharing his experience of coming back on campus after 25 years, Shantanu Khosla, an alumni of the batch of 83 said, "It feels great to be back on campus!" 

Some of the notable alumni who made their presence felt included Shantanu Khosla, MD, P & G India; Anand Kripalu, President Asia, Cadbury; N Thiruambalam, Chairman and MD, Heinz India; Sanjay Kao, Head of Consumer Finance Asia, RBS; Subrata Biswas, CEO, Damodar Valley Corporation; Vinay Chhabra, Director, Standard Chartered bank; Rajeev Katyal, Director (Education), Microsoft Corporation Pvt Ltd; Aswini Jain, Vice President, Citibank; and Sanjay Nayak, President, McCann WorldGroup.  

Students also took a keen interest in learning of the spirit and rigors of entrepreneurship which was best embodied by the veterans from IIM Calcutta such as Ajay Jain, TechPro Infrastructures Pvt Ltd; Jayaram Marthy, VitalTech; and Sukanya Kripalu, Sukanya Consulting. The alumni also had a word of advice and encouragement to offer with regards to the current market scenario. 

Reunion activities offer a diverse menu including a panel discussion, an annual cricket tournament, the alumni festival, campus tours, the walk down the memory lane and more. Sunday began with a campus tour for the re-uniting alumni, followed by the IIMC Challenger Cup with football matches between the students and alumni. Student interactions followed by games, Antakshari and a bonfire ignited the spirit of bonhomie as the alumni bonded with pals from their student lives. The games were followed by an Ethnic Style Party. Monday saw the Alumni interacting with the faculty as both sides updated each other.  

"We had an extremely productive session with the alumni and vow to implement their suggestions which will help our institute reach greater heights", Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay said.
