An International Conference on Educational Leadership (ICEL) was inaugurated on January 5 at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM B).

Minister of Medical Education, Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka, Shri Ramachandra Gowda inaugurated the conference on behalf of the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri B S Yeddyurappa.

Shri Gowda, conveying the Government's approach, made a positive statement about the need to review strategies according to the times and trends, so as to align with contemporary needs of society, and update policies based on practical experience. The education sector is vital for development, and a holistic approach is necessary at all levels, be it primary, secondary or higher education.

In his inaugural remarks, Director of IIM B Professor Pankaj Chandra said that the education sector today faces multiple challenges in an increasingly technological, complex and diverse society. It is important to get the focus back to key issues such as real learning and diversity, rather than persist with the current trends that prioritize certification and standardization to develop the new generation of educators and the educated.

Drawing on his own experience in working at the grassroots in the Biligiri Hills of Karnataka, Dr Sudarshan emphasized equity issues, sustainable development and the need for good governance in educational leadership. Dr Sudarshan made several important points with reference to adapting policies to local language, culture and environment so as to achieve the desired goals.
