AIMA Directors' Conclave: 'Industry & B-schools should work together to bridge the gap'

The shortage of trained and market ready managers across industries has emerged as a significant and complex challenge to India's growth and future. Industry- B-schools collaboration can work out to solve this major problem.

While holding a panel discussion on the theme of 'Industry – B schools: Bridging the Gap' at the conclave, Dr CS Venkata Ratnam, Director, International Management Institute, New Delhi said, "It is essential for every B-school to regularly invite people from industry to teach their students about the current trends and challenges which they are facing. Faculties should also understand the market needs from them so that they can create best fit managers."

Prof Uday Salunkhe, Director, Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai said, "To create the best fit managers for the industry, we need to teach the students from the day one about what is happening in Market at present and what would be the market scenario and challenges which you may see in the next two-three years."

"In addition of the current Industry-academia tie-ups, more such tie-ups should be done. We, the people of industry are not finding all MBAs industry ready. Even after gaining two-year management education, the students still not able to think new ideas and apply managerial strategies," said Mr Santosh Desai, CEO, Future Brands.

Mr Desai futher added, "B-schools should teach the practical knowledge with the Industry support to provide them better ideas which will help individual ads well as industry to grow in better manner."

All India Management Association (AIMA) organized its 12th Director's Conclave with the theme of 'The Spirit of Entrepreneurship' on February 17, 2009 in New Delhi. The conclave saw discussion on the themes of 'Back to the Drawing Board: Designing an MBA to encourage Entrepreneurship', 'Curriculum Design to promote Entrepreneurship' and 'Industry – B-schools: Bridging the Gap'. AIMA Directors' Conclave is an important part of the annual management calendar.
