Indian Business Schools should get ready for an era of global competition, and focus on the future relevance rather than the past benchmarks.

In other words, B-schools should foster and contribute in creating the 'next-practices' rather than merely study the so called best practices emerging from the western world. That's the theme of the talk delivered by Dr. Uday Salunke Director, Welingkar Institute of Management at AIMA Directors' conclave on February 17, 2009.

"Indian management education needs to focus on future, and not just be enamored by the past corporate successes, as captured in western cases and best practices textbooks. The world is changing dramatically, and we should change too. We should have more confidence in our abilities, and chart out a new course," exhorted Dr Salunkhe.

Talking from his personal example of transforming Mumbai based Welingkar Institute of Management from just a school admitting 1500 students in 1995 to now 15,000 students, a tenfold increase, Dr Salunkhe said, "Business transformation and entrepreneurship is based on power of vision. Vision should then be followed by ruthless execution."

Calling traditional management education as a 'resource allocation exercise' in safe times, Dr Salunkhe said, "Management has traditionally been merely a resource allocation task. But entrepreneurship and business creation is all about how can we create a new future, while understanding the uncertainties. That's what entrepreneurship development and education is all about."

Dr. Uday Salunke is a mechanical engineer with a management degree in Operations, and a Doctorate in 'Turnaround Strategies'. He has 12 years of experience in the corporate world including Mahindra & Mahindra, ISPL and other companies before joining Welingkar in 1995. Dr. Salunkhe has been invited as visiting fellow at the Harvard Business School, USA and European University, Germany.

All India Management Association (AIMA) organized its 12th Director's Conclave with the theme of 'The Spirit of Entrepreneurship' on February 17, 2009 in New Delhi.
