India’s top non-IIM B-schools, have adopted ‘rolling placements’ strategy to beat the slowdown woes.

While traditionally, institutes like Faculty of Management Studies Delhi (FMS), Xavier Labour Relations Institute Jamshedpur (XLRI), Management Development Institute Gurgaon (MDI) and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade New Delhi (IIFT) held ‘placement week’, where all students got placed in a matter of few days, this year the placement process may spill over to several weeks. Sharing information with MBAUniverse.com, B-schools said that this ‘rolling placement’ process allows for more companies to participate.

While XLRI started its rolling placement process earlier this month, FMS Delhi kicked off its process on February 21. Similarly MDI also started the process this month, and expects the placements to go on till end of March. IIFT started the placement process in January, and expects the placements to go on till next month.

Institutes are confident that by spreading the placements over several weeks they will be able to create better opportunities for their students.

Said Varun Mehta, Member of placement committee at XLRI, “The Final Placement process at XLRI was started in the month of February 2009. We have rolling placements this year instead of placement week.”

“Yes, obviously there are tough times where students are receiving less job offers and salary packages. But, XLRI students have been able to get good job profiles. Overall, we are seeing healthy placements here,” shared Varun.

FMS began Rolling Final Placement Process on February 21, 2009. While sharing the placement scenario at FMS, L Arvind Narasimhan, member of Placement Committee said, “Yes, there is a decline in number of offers and salaries offered to students of all institutes but we see that things at FMS are even better.”

“A large number of companies are recruiting FMS students but companies from IT and Banking sectors are very cautious while recruiting students,” added Arvind.

A member of Placement Committee of MDI told MBAUniverse.com, “The Final Placements at MDI were started on February 2009 and it is expected to over by March 31, 2009. Till now 25-30 companies have visited MDI.”

While last year, 168 students got placed on the Day Zero. More than 120 companies evinced interest last year at MDI.

“The overall placement scenario seems good where MDI students are still inclined towards their job profiles. Yes, salary packages became low but students are getting best fit job profiles. At the end of the day, we expect all students will be happy with their placements,” he added.

Mr Munish Bhargava, Corporate and Placement Adviser, IIFT, New Delhi informed, “The Final Placements at IIFT were started in January 2009 and will be over by March 2009. A large number of companies are visiting IIFT to recruit students. Job offers and salary packages are cutting down. Till now, 65% of the total graduating batch has placed.”

Final placements of the MBA (IB) students at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) saw 52 companies recruiting students at higher average salary last year.
