IIM L confers diplomas to 270 PG students at annual Convocation

Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM L) hosted its annual Convocation ceremony on March 17, 2009, in which diplomas were conferred to 270 students from Post Graduate and Fellow programs.

The Convocation ceremony saw students being awarded their diplomas by Dr Devi Singh, Director IIM Lucknow, and Dr JJ Irani, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM Lucknow and Director, Tata Sons. Dr K Kasturirangan, Director of National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Ex-Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was the chief guest on the occasion and delivered the Convocation address.
 
At the convocation, 231 students in the 23rd batch of Post Graduate Program in Management, 37 students in the 4th batch of Post Graduate Program in Agri-business Management, and two students in the Fellow Program were awarded their diplomas.
 
Dr Devi Singh, IIM L Director, said, “These diploma-holders, placed as 3500 IIM L alumni, will continue with their efforts to further build the Institute's ongoing reputation. At IIM L, it has been our endeavor to create young leaders of tomorrow. We create real leaders, who lead by example, be it reaching the heights of the corporate world or philanthropic endeavors. These leaders will live by what we preach and will govern with justice and compassion.”
 
“During the academic year 2007-08, the institute witnessed an all-round growth and in continuance with its march ahead, undertook some significant initiatives,” said Dr Devi Singh.
 
While commenting on the initiatives taken by the institute and success achieved from that, Dr Devi Singh said at Convocation, “The Noida campus of the institute launched its 4th Working Managers Program (WMP) and International Program in Management for Executives (IPMX). The first batch of 65 students in WMP program successfully completed the course during the academic year 2007-08. Thirty-five research contributions, in the form of books, book chapters, book reviews, published papers, conference/seminar papers, case studies, and working papers, have already been published during the year so far. Several research contributions of faculty members received national and international recognition and bagged prestigious awards.”
 
He added, “We worked on a large number of research projects. Several consultancy assignments was taken up / completed during the last academic year. Ten consultancy assignments have been completed so far and 16 are in progress. Twenty-one research projects have been completed. Five new Faculty Members joined the Institute during the year.”
 
While throwing light on the development programs started by the institute, IIM L Director said, “More than 75 Management Development Programs for 1600 top and senior-level management executives, have already been conducted so far, generating a revenue of in excess of Rs10 crores. Three Advanced Management Programs (AMP) for ONGC of 5 weeks duration with overseas-learning component to Europe were held. Three AMP programs for RBI executives were held for 2 weeks; in India, Singapore and Malaysia. A three-month management program has been finalized for next 5 years with Railway Board to train more than 100 executives every year.”
 
He further said, “Our international academic collaborations with many partner institutions in Europe and North America gained further momentum during the year. We have international partnerships with 22 institutes. As part of social responsibility to the society, IIM L is contributing towards the training of trainers. In this direction, programs have been conducted for teachers of management institutes, principals of various schools and colleges and also the principals of district institutes of education and training.”
 
On financial support provided to students, he said, “In order to provide financial support to the needy and meritorious students, IIM L continues to offer large number of scholarships. During the year 2007-08, 28.8 lakhs rupees worth of need-based scholarships were disbursed among 46 students.”
