Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM B) inaugurated the one-year full-time Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) on April 3, 2009.

The inauguration session will be followed by orientation sessions on April 3 & 4; and the classes for the new batch will be commenced from April 6. The programme has been designed for executives; this new programme is an addition to the long-duration programmes offered by IIM B, and significantly enhances the range of educational opportunities at the Institute.

Delivering the inaugural address, Dr Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman & Managing Director, Biocon India Limited and Member of the Board of Governors at IIMB, said, “The 21st century brings great challenges, especially in the context of the changing economic order. Evolving a long-term vision is a challenge for most entrepreneurs. Yet these are exciting times with burgeoning opportunities. Innovation can deliver the competitive edge, and managing innovation effectively can make the difference between success and failure.”

In his welcome address to the incoming batch of students, Prof Pankaj Chandra, Director IIM B invited the participants to utilize the resources of the Institute to the fullest extent. “These are difficult times, and yet interesting times. The society is trying to find a balance between market and regulation, and seeking the dominant paradigm that would serve as an alternate model. Innovation and flexibility offer useful constructs for envisioning the future,” Prof Chandra said.

“Another distinctive feature of Executive PGPM is the innovative approach to the syllabus and course content. For the first time, themes drawn from the realm of social sciences are being integrated into management studies in a structured manner, leading to a nuanced, multi-layered understanding of management issues. Seminars anchored by experts and practitioners in the fields of liberal arts, sociology and environment will form a significant component of the learning and pedagogy,” Prof Chandra said.

Introducing the programme, Prof Malay Bhattacharyya, Chairperson Executive PGPM said, “A unique feature of the programme is a comprehensive project wherein each participant will apply management concepts and methodologies in a real-life management problem.”

“Emerging markets are at the core of the Executive PGPM, with intensive study and analysis of the context of each country achieved through experiential study tours in the BRICs countries and in Africa. This is based on the conviction that growth in the future will come from the emerging economies which require special focus and understanding,” he further added.

With diversity being a stated objective, the EXecutive PGPM batch comprising 73 students includes participants with wide-ranging skills, background, exposure and experience, such that learning through peer group exchange and knowledge sharing is likely to be one of the most beneficial aspects of this programme.
