ASCI to start new session for PGDHM amidst rising demand of professionals in health-care sector

Building on decades of expertise in the area of management, Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad, has announced the admission dates for the 4th Batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management (PGDHM) for 2009-11 session.

The PGDHM, with intake of 30 seats, is a two-year residential full time programme offered by ASCI and recognized by AICTE. ASCI has invited applications for the programme to be commenced in July 2009.
The date of issue of application forms and brochure is March 31, 2009, and the same will be accepted till April 30. The entrance exam will be conducted on May 16 in Delhi and Hyderabad.

The programme comprises four semesters, three semesters of residential training followed by one semester of internship training. The duration of each semester is 25 weeks. The programme is targeted at (a) Graduates in medicine and allied fields, (b) Practicing hospital administrators, (c) Graduates / Post-Graduates who opt for a career in hospital management.

As far as the eligibility of candidates is concerned, the selection process is competitive. All candidates must write an entrance test and participate in a group discussion and a personal interview. The selection process will be conducted in New Delhi and Hyderabad. Preference will be given to medical graduates and sponsored candidates. Those who have appeared for the final examination and awaiting results can also apply.

According to ASCI, the Course curriculum has been designed to cover the conceptual and qualitative skills needed by administrators/managers in contemporary hospitals. The programme is rigorous and practice oriented with a teaching approach that combines classroom lectures with case studies, team discussions and presentations and field visits to a wide variety of hospitals.

 During Internship, the participants undergo training in the various departments of public and corporate hospitals that have been empanelled for the purpose in order to understand the objectives, structure, workflows and overall functioning of each hospital service. The internship is designed to help bridge the sometimes-significant gap between academic preparation and the field of practice.

Commenting on the objective of this programme, ASCI says, “The need for professionally trained hospital managers is being increasingly felt in Indian hospitals, whether private or public, new or old, large or small metropolitan or not. This is largely due to growing recognition that performance levels of hospitals in various managerial and functional areas are falling short of standards that are known to be achievable.”
