Are you getting ready for Crack CAT 2009, but have questions on how to prepare, where to study and which B-schools to target? Like thousands of MBAUniverse.com readers, you too can get the right answers from India’s top CAT experts on Ask MBAUniverse.com

Over 250 expert Q&As have been published so far. Using this platform, MBAUniverse.com reader Harish from Pune asked: “What is the weightage of hobbies towards preparation for MBA. Is it necessary to develop one as part of preparation? How much time should be dedicated towards this?”

Responding to the query, Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi said: “Dear Harish, it is not mandatory that you need a hobby to get into a good B-school. You are expected to have a good understanding of what is happening around you and an ability to look at these events in a logical and analytical manner. Please do not try to develop a hobby just because you feel it matters in getting into a good B-School.”

Another MBAUniverse.com reader Kumar Gaurav Sonkar from Varanasi asked, “Sir, I am the student of BBA and I am in the 4th Sem so next year I will be able to give the exam. Please tell me what type question came in CAT related to Maths and in MAT because I have good command on my vocab but I m not comfortable with Maths because my background is with Bio. So please tell the level of Maths question came in CAT and MAT.”

Mr. R. Shiva Kumar, Director, R&D-Career Launcher responded, “Hi Kumar, there is a slight difference between CAT and MAT. CAT is slightly tougher compared to MAT. There are two areas you need quantitative skills:

1) The Quant Section: For both CAT and MAT if you are comfortable with NCERT math of class 7, 8, 9, 10 it is a great start. Beyond this there are a few areas that you would want to learn in CAT, very little for MAT.

Thankfully, Math is such an area that can be learnt through methods. So if there is a lot of enthusiasm to learn and not shy away from the subject 6 to 8 months is sufficient to do well in this section.

2) Data Interpretation: This has two types…Calculation based, where speed in calculations coupled with basic definitions is checked . The other type is reasoning and logic based questions…where there is no prior knowledge that is checked…It is all about your ability to think logically. I believe the second part is independent of knowledge of Maths.

All said and done, if you do know that your weak area is Math…Spend 2 to 3 months completing the NCERT Math stuff till class 10th. Thereafter it would be easier for you to work on what is required.
In another question posed by Ravi Kumar from Lucknow, he asked: “Sir, I am a final year B-Tech student in computer science engineering. I want to ask if MBA will be better option for me. Will my B.Tech degree be of any help for MBA?”

Responding to the query Mr Gejo Srinivasan, General Manager, IMS Learning, said, “Dear Ravi, irrespective of any job that you do, you will eventually become a manager. For instance when a school teacher becomes a principal he/she is actually a manager. An MBA is a formal education to help you become a better manager. Since you are an engineer, definitely an MBA would be an added advantage. You do have the option of working with an engineering firm in the long run.”
