As MBA aspirants begin preparations for CAT 2009, questions on how to prepare, where to study, which books and study material to refer are nagging MBA aspirants.'Ask MBAUniverse.com’ is a popular Q&A platform by MBAUniverse.com.

Using this platform, MBAUniverse.com reader Manish Sankhla from Bangalore asked: I am doing Bachelor of Business Management from Bangalore currently in 2rd year (4th semester) I want to know what is the best time to start for preparation of MBA and which options is better either to study here or abroad.

Responding to the query Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi, said, “Dear Manish, for doing an MBA in India, you should start preparing right now for CAT 09 and other MBA entrance exams. I presume that you are now in pre-final year and will complete your BBM in 2010. For an MBA from abroad, good B-schools in USA need 16 years of education and work experience of more than a couple of years. B-schools in Australia and UK are less stringent. For US, you will have to write GMAT and it will be a good idea to prepare for it, write it now since the score is valid for five year.”

Another reader Shashank from Surat asked “Dear Sir, I am presently pursuing degree course in mechanical stream and I am in third year. I want to go for MBA. But I am confused firstly how, where and when to start the preparation. Secondly what are the options available other than cracking the CAT 09 to go for MBA.”

Responding to the query Mr. Showick Thorpe, of V&S Thorpes Education Inc said: “Dear Shashank. I always wonder that why students in engineering colleges do not plan out their preparation strategy in 3rd year. Why do they wait till final year for quick course? You are well on time. I suggest that you go and talk to coaches from 3-4 major institutes in Surat and check what they have for you. People like TIME, IMS, CL and other elite institutes generally have full batches and good strategy for a 2 year programme. Pitfall: some coaching institutes may not have adequate numbers (of students) and may be clubbing you with other batches (1 year or 6 month courses). Avoid such institutes as they are offering nothing new, and even if they are great coaches, you may go there for a quick recap later.”
