Industrialist Vijaypat Singhania is the new IIM-A Chairman

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has nominated Padma Bhushan awardee Vijaypat Singhania, chairman emeritus of Raymond Ltd, as chairman of the Society and the Board of Governors of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

This appointment is for a period of five years. The outgoing chairman of the IIM-A Society is Infosys Chief Mentor N R Narayana Murthy.

A keen aviator, Vijaypat Singhania has had many achivements -- both as a businessman and as an adventure sportsman. After making Raymonds an iconic Indian brand, Singhania passed over the mantle of the Raymonds group to his son Gautam Hari Singhania who took over as chairman and managing director of Raymonds in September 2000.

Vijaypat Singhania holds the world record for flying at the highest altitude in a hot air balloon. He achieved this feat at the ripe age of 67. He also has another world record to his name: a solo flight in a microlight from the UK to India in 1998.

In 2006, he was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award bestowed by the Government of India.
