The placements at Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon has finally come to an end. In an exclusive interview with MBAUniverse.com, Dean of Placements and Corporate Affairs of MDI Gurgaon NR Bhusnur Math said, “I’m happy that although it took a longer time, the placements at MDI Gurgaon have closed for 2009.”

Talking about the global downturn and its impact on the MBA institute, Math said, “Yes, recession did hamper the placement process at MDI Gurgaon, but we were confident about placing all our students at a place of their choice. Some of the regular recruiters, who used to visit our campus each time, did not turn up because of the slowdown. But then, we were visited by some of the best Public Sector Units (PSUs) instead. I’m looking at it in a positive way as earlier students were not much keen on taking up PSU jobs.”

Math said that this year many new recruiters visited MDI Gurgaon due to the institute’s increased level of interaction with companies from various fields. While sharing information with MBAUniverse.com, he said, “This year many nationalised banks came for recruitments and we are looking at it as a result of expanding our interaction. Other than PSUs, some of the old recruiters like Maruti, Axis Bank and Citi Group among others came for placements too. But many of the Consulting and IT firms froze the recruitments due to the economic slowdown.”

Also, the MBA institute saw many more students taking up entrepreneurship as career choices. Last year, six students from the MBA institute opted to start their own ventures. “Yes, about 24 of our students this year have either gone for higher studies or started their own ventures. However, this was not due to lack of jobs, but because of their own zeal to do something of their own or pursue further studies. Look at it from the other side, they had the confidence to start on their own compaies just after finishing their MBA from MDI Gurgaon. Last year also six students had gone for entrepreneurship,” Math told MBAUniverse.com while negating the view that students went for entrepreneurship due to fear of unstable jobs.
