The MBA programme session for the new batch of students at Xavier Labour and Relations Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur commenced on June 15, 2009 with a large batch size of a total of 340 students. In an exclusive chat with MBAUniverse.com, Roshan N Dastur from XLRI Director Fr E Abraham’s Office said, “The highlight of this year’s MBA programme is an increase in the number of PM&IR students. This year the XLRI had to divide the PM&IR batch into two, with 60 students in each batch. Also 120 students have enrolled for the BM programme and a 100 enrolled for the GMP programme at XLRI.”

While sharing activity details of the commencement programme with MBAUniverse.com, Dastur said, “XLRI has arranged a 10-day programme on team building and village exposure for the new students of the MBA programme scheduled to begin on July 3, 2009. It has been planned with the objective to reduce the gap in mathematics and accounting knowledge amongst the students coming from different educational backgrounds. The programme will also help them identify their profile and areas for self-development.”

Explaining the team building and village exposure programme, Dastur said, “This team building programme will develop leadership qualities in the students and will also instil teamwork characteristics in them. In this programme the students will go through different adventure activities including overnight camping in tents.”

Dastur told MBAUniverse.com that the village exposure programme is mandatory for all the newcomers at XLRI. “The village exposure programme will be held each Friday-Saturday-Sunday and will extend till August 21, 2009 with a total of eight visits. All MBA programme students who have recently joined XLRI are expected to stay in the villages and study practices and issues related to rural India,” he said and added that a two-day workshop on creative leadership skills for future managers has also been arranged. This year, the study fee for the MBA programme at XLRI is Rs 3.51 lakh.

The inaugural address was delivered by Fr. Ozzie Mascarenhas, SJ and Charles H. Kellstadt, Chair Professor of Marketing and Ethics from University of Detroit Mercy, USA on June 15 at the XLRI Jamshedpur campus. In his presentation, Kellstadt focussed on the importance of learning as opposed to knowledge gathering and information. In his speech, he defined learning as: “Internalising the world around us to expand our possibilities for others – to make a better world.”
