IIM-B’s faculty development program in Corporate Governance

Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore’s Center for Corporate Governance and Citizenship announced a faculty development program in Corporate Governance. It will be held between 21 and 26 May 2007.

Said Dr N Balasubramanian, Programme Director and Chairman, IIMB-CCGC Faculty Development Programme in Corporate governance to MBAUniverse.com, “Our objective is to spread the message of the imperatives of good governance in the corporate sector and to encourage many more educational institutions to offer courses in this area to their students. The purpose of this faculty development programme is to build and strengthen capacity in this field.”

According to information provided by IIM-B’s Center for Corporate Governance and Citizenship, the six-day intensive program is designed to provide rigorous training to assist participants enhance and enrich their knowledge and teaching skills in the emerging field of Corporate Governance.

Commenting on the need of such programme he said, “Corporate Governance is intimately connected to practical application in the operation of corporations generally and listed companies more specifically.” Further he added, “Company directors require orientation on their responsibilities and obligations to their companies and to various stakeholders including shareholders. Business and management students need to have an appreciation of the principles of governance and their practice, including related issues of business ethics, corporate responsibility and citizenship, and so on.”

Teachers with experience in business schools and in management studies/business administration departments of universities/colleges are eligible to attend the program. Even fellows from IIMs and PhD scholars from recognized universities (including those who are about to qualify) and intending to pursue an academic career are also eligible for the program.

“Faculty for this programme, hosted by IIMB-CCGC is drawn from IIM Bangalore, the National Law School University of India, Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kolkatta. A couple of Australian academics, who have been associated with IIMB-CCGC will also be contributing in the area of ethics and social responsibility,” said Dr Balasubrahmaniam.

The course will have interactive sessions, and will address three interlinked dimensions of updating subject content, developing teaching material (including cases), and improving delivery skills and methodologies. On the whole, the program will cover board/directorial and executive responsibilities in corporate governance, strategy formulation and performance monitoring, risk management and internal control frameworks, communication policies, top management and leadership issues, value frameworks and business ethics, business and society, sustainability, financial reporting and disclosure, and legislation and regulation.

Dr N Balasubramanian said, “Besides offering MBA level electives in these areas has also trained over 400 company directors and top management executives in different aspects of corporate governance both in the public and private sector.”

According to Dr Balasubramanian In 2005, the World Bank -OECD sponsored Global Corporate governance Forum decided to offer a Train the Trainers Programme for academics and bureaucrats in South Asia, it was to IIMB_CCGC that they turned for collaboration, and I had the honour of jointly directing that programme which was attended by experienced academics from IIMs in India and elsewhere as well as senior level bureaucrats, regulators, and professional institutions from SAARC countries including India.

The IIMB Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship was formed in 2003 to bring under a single umbrella; all the research, teaching and policy support work the Institute faculty were engaged in for the past several years in the area of Corporate Governance and Citizenship. It was established with vision to enhance awareness of the imperatives of globally acceptable standards of corporate governance and issues in their actual implementation, through teaching and training initiatives at various levels of business and management education and directorial and executive development. Along with this to provide policy support to governments, regulatory agencies, industry associations, and civic society bodies, based on independent research and study of topics bearing upon the Centre's field of activity.
