Ending weeks of suspense, political parties yesterday evening gave the go-ahead to the Center to allow IIMs and other Central educational institutions to proceed with admissions for general, SC and ST categories for the current academic session.

But this will be done without implementing the OBC Quota. A meeting of UPA constituents and Left allies gave a go ahead to the HRD Ministry's proposal to fill the seats as per last year's norms. The proposal said to leave out the increased seats to accommodate the 27 per cent OBC quota till the Supreme Court decides the matter. The Court will hear the matter on May 8.

Explaining the delay in coming to this formula, a note circulated by HRD Ministry at the meeting with allies, the government said one of the reasons for withholding admissions for all categories of students was to ensure that the Centre's case before the Supreme Court for an early hearing was not adversely affected. This objective "has now been met" in view of the apex court's most recent order.

IIMs have been indicated about this development late last night. They are meanwhile waiting for an “official communication” from the ministry today. According to sources, this communication is expected to reach by 11 am today.

Once the IIMs receive the communication, they will rush up to announce their admission list on their website by evening today.
