Placements 2010: MBA students of LIBA Chennai getting good returns from upswing in Indian economy

Compared to the year before, the current year witnessed quicker placements of students than the last year. By January end last year only 60% was placed. This year it is 80%.

The final placements at the Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai, is in full swing at present. Leading recruiters from India and from abroad have converged at the campus of the B-school to select the students for different work profiles. The placements season of the B-school starts in the first week of December, breaks for winter vacation for three weeks and commences in January third week.

Although the final figures on the placements are likely to emerge by April second week, the B-school has shared with MBAUniverse.com some of the key highlights of the placements till now, as on 31 March 2010.

Key Highlights
-- Total students participating in the placement process is 112, out of which 107 have already been placed till now.

-- The average salary package offered is Rs. 8.2 lakh p.a. (figure is preliminary estimate)

-- Recruiters: The recruiters visiting LIBA for placements include regulars like Vedanta, Citi, Murugappa, TCS, CTS, Deloitte. The list of new recruiters includes Religare, Thomas Cook, BILT, Virtusa, TESCO, etc.

-- Profiles: This time several recruiters have offered finance profiles that had vanished the year before due to slowdown. Marketing profiles outnumbered the sales profiles.

-- Sectors: Sectorally, more manufacturing and BFSI firms stepped in for recruitment.

The following are the other highlights of this year’s placement process till now:

-- Is quicker. Compared to the year before, the current year witnessed quicker placements of students than the last year. By January end last year only 60% was placed. This year it is 80%. 

-- Better fit between student's desired profiles and offers. Last year was a year of survival: which meant students could not negotiate pay or profiles. This year is different. 

-- Better pay packets. The average salary has risen from INR 6 to INR 8 lakh (preliminary estimate)

-- Better and more number of firms. Last year only about 65 firms evinced interest and participated in the placement process. This year about 160 firms evinced interest and finally only 50 firms managed to finally participate in the placement process and recruit.
