Experts suggest that when you start your preparation for the CAT 2010, you must start with your weakest section. Quantitative Ability is one such section in MBA Exam, which is dreaded by many and they feel that they are clue less about how to start and continue their preparation for CAT 2010 MBA Exam so that they achieve at least minimum percentile. This article of MBAUniverse.com is for them whose weakest MBA Exam section is Quantitative Ability and the MBA experts and CAT toppers will provide them the extra dose of advice on MBA Exam preparation.
The basic areas which are tested in CAT Exam in the Quantitative Ability section are Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Mensuration. In the following five steps, you will know how to improve your weakest MBA Exam section, Quantitative Ability for CAT 2010.
Read the basics and clarify your concepts for CAT Exam: Like the other sections, the Quantitative Ability for CAT Exam also tests your basic knowledge of mathematical concepts which you have acquired till Class X. “CAT Exam is not testing you whether you are a great mathematician. It only uses Mathematics to judge your 'quantitative abilities'. The concepts needed to tackle a CAT Exam question are pretty basic,” says Gejo Sreenivasan, Principal Consultant, Career Launcher. For that, what is necessary is to gather the basic conceptual knowledge. 'First step is to have a thorough understanding of concepts,” Sreenivasan adds.
The best way to develop your basic concept for CAT 2010 is to revisit your school text books for math. 'Read the NCERT math books for the basic concepts. When you get the basic concepts clarified, move on to the questions and see how well you can solve them,” says Vinayak Kudva, Product Head, IMS Learning.
Get well versed with tables, quick calculation for CAT 2010: Since speed is an important criterion for CAT Exam, it is important that you are quick with your calculation. “A very simple but effective way to improve your speed with numbers is to observe the numbers that appear in a year and make all possible combinations with the four numbers – ratio of first two and the last two, total of the four digits, inverted ratio, etc. another could be doing calculations using mobile numbers, pin codes, etc.,” suggests Manish Saraf, COO, PT Education.
You should also be well versed with the tables till 20, their ratios, percentages etc for MBA Exam. Saraf suggests an effective method to do that. 'Prepare a table with first 30 numbers in column and rest of the column having square, cubes, square root, reciprocal, percentage of reciprocals etc. you should try to memorize this table as this could be of great help in fast calculations during the MBA Exam or CAT Exam.'
Gaurav Swarnkar, who got 94.89 percentile in CAT Exam 2009 and is now admitted to NITIE Mumbai also suggests a similar plan. 'You should be very prompt with some results like - tables up to at least 20, squares of up to 30, cubes till 12, reciprocal ratios up to 1/25, and square roots and cube roots.” Incidentally, Swarnkar was a student of PT Education. It can be rightly said, 'Like mentor, like mentee!'
Get the right books and practice materials for CAT 2010: It is very important to choose the right books and practice material for the Quantitative Ability preparation for CAT 2010. If it is your weakest section of the MBA Exam, you shall not study or practice from a book meant for an advanced student. As mentioned before, the NCERT book of Class X level is the best to start with. 'For CAT 2010 Quantitative Ability, you can refer to books by Arun Sharma which have problems of different levels of difficulty. At the same time, if you can get your hands on the notes given out by the coaching institutes, then practice questions from there,' says Glen D'silva, an IIM Ahmedabad student.
Once you get habituated with the basic material, you should move on to the higher level for the MBA Exam Preparations. 'Practice from the basic study materials and then move towards the CAT Exam like questions. For that, you should practice from the previous years' CAT Exam question papers,' suggests Kudva. 'Go through the previous CAT Exam papers to understand the difficulty level of the questions,' D'silva adds.
Take regular sectional MBA mock test for CAT 2010: Take regular sectional MBA mock tests to judge your progress for CAT 2010. After every lesson you learn or practice, you should take a sectional MBA mock test. Do not go for full length MBA mock tests until and unless you are absolutely clear with the concepts. 'Take regular sectional MBA mock test and see where you stand as far as the CAT Exam preparation is concerned. Find out the reason of your weakness, is it silly mistake or conceptual errors. If it is silly mistake, then you need to concentrate more and practice for the MBA Exam. If it is conceptual error, you need to go back to your books and practice more until and unless you improve in that area,' says Sreenivasan.
On the basis of your performance in the sectional mock tests, decide your level of preparation and practice. If you are improving, read and practice from advanced materials, and if you do not see much improvement, stick to the basic material.
Focus on maintaining accuracy for CAT 2010: Quantitative Ability or mathematics is such a section which depends very much on your accuracy. One silly mistake can change the entire ball game altogether. So while you are practicing or taking sectional MBA mock tests for Quantitative Ability for CAT 2010, you should ensure that you do not lack the accuracy. 'A couple of speed math tests every day are a must. However one thing that should always be kept in mind while preparing for these MBA Exam sections is that along with speed, accuracy is also important. So it should be made sure that one does not loses track of accuracy while concentrating on speed,' says Saraf.
