“Flexibility and adaptability key to success,” says Dr. Brij Mohanlall Munjal at IILM Graduate School of Management Convocation

Dr. Brij Mohanlall Munjal, Chairman, Hero Honda Motors Limited advised the management students to be flexible, adaptable, humble and hardworking.

He was presiding over the 12th convocation of Delhi NCR based IILM Graduate School of Management (IGSM) on July 20. On the occasion, 154 management students of IGSM were conferred with the title of PGDBM. The ceremony was addressed by Dr Munjal, Dr B Bhatachraya, Director IILM and Major Gen B D Wadhwa, AVSM (Retd), Director General IILM. 

While addressing the gathering Dr Munjal said, “As leaders of tomorrow your task is not to just make perfect plan but also to help to build organization and teams that will be versatile and flexible. To become successful, future managers need high degree of flexibility and adaptability.”  

Speaking on the occasion Dr B Bhatacharya said, “At IILM one fourth of our total focus is devoted to soft skills that relates to communication and negotiation.” Further he added, “The most important thing for a successful manager is ability to take decisions, deal with every kind of people and ability to ask question. I expect from my students that after few years they will definitely develop a confidence of entrepreneur in themselves.” 

In his message Director General of IILM Major Gen B D Wadhwa, AVSM (Retd), said, “Do hard work because degree is just a starting point. You have to learn a lot through experience. It’s time to put your learning into the real business world.” 

At the ceremony the Institute also awarded the Kulwant Rai medals. The name repeatedly called on the stage was of Ms Apeksha Mathur who bagged both gold & silver medals of Kulwant Rai award. While the other names in the list of silver medal included Ms Garima Sharma (marketing management), Rinku Chalani (Human resource Management) and Rinky Agrwal (International Business). 

Dr Munjal also highlighted that business is only about making money, but also about service towards humanity. Said Dr Munjal, “Running a business is not just about reaching commercial goal, but to serve humanity as well.” Commenting on the skills required in this fast changing world, Dr Munjal added, “Self-awareness, ability to deal with uncertainty, ability negotiate and decision-making are some most important skills required to compete in this dynamic world.” 

Students listened to the business-leader with rapt attention. Dr Munjal, a first generation entrepreneur who started small, through sheer hard work and perseverance made it to the top. Today, Hero Group is the largest manufacturer of two-wheelers in the World and Brij Mohanlall Munjal is the man widely credited with its success. Dr. Munjal was honored with Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2001.
