XLRI Jamshedpur has announced the date for its XAT exam: January 6, 2008. MBAUniverse.com spoke to XLRI director Fr N Casimir Raj SJ and asked him to advise XAT aspirants.

He stressed on the need for understanding the fundamentals, and recognizing the importance of the application process. “Aspirants should start preparing for the XAT from at least 6 months ahead.” They should concentrate on the fundamentals. Once they are clear with the fundamentals, they will be able to answer the application-oriented questions. In English, they should know the precise meaning of words, and not vague meanings,” he said.

Like other management entrance exams, XAT is also multiple-choice answers based. It has three sections: Quantitative aptitude (QA) and Data interpretation (DI), General Knowledge the English Usage (EU) and Reading Comprehension (RC). There are also some questions on values and essay writing. In an earlier interview to this portal, Fr Raj had said, “XAT has three objective-type test areas: verbal ability, quantitative ability and decision-making ability. In past we also had 10 questions on values. Students also have to write essays on a topics based on current value systems. These questions and essays are considered more during the interview stage. We read these essays before taking the interview. With these essays we try to check the value systems of the aspirants.”

Advising students to take the application process more seriously, he suggested: “When aspirants fill up the application forms, they should fill up all the columns accurately. We find the students who fill forms accurately also do well in the exam. Similarly, at the exam, they should write clearly and accurately all the details asked for.”

While sharing the logistics of XAT, Fr Raj said, “We are very careful that XAT goes on well, i.e. no errors, no logistical problems, proper conduct of the exam etc. We try our best to do this and leave the rest to God.”

Wishing applicants for success he said, “I wish all the candidates the best… I also wish for their success to get admission into their dream institutes.”
