MBAUniverse spoke to K. Ramkumar, ED, ICICI Bank to find out the ways for creating differentiated B school rankings and current state of our B schools.

The MBAUniverse.com Annual B-school Survey, which was launched recently, is underway. Directors, Deans, Admissions Chairpersons at 200 B schools across the country are being sent the survey questionnaire.

To ensure that the highest levels of credibility and accuracy are met, the survey is being conducted under the guidance of high powered advisory body. Noted management academician Padma Shri Dr Bakul Dholakia, former Director, IIM Ahmedabad is the chairman of the Survey advisory body. The other eminent members of the Advisory Body are Mr K. Ramkumar, Executive Director, ICICI Bank and Dr RK Shukla, Director, NCAER-Centre for Macro Consumer Research.

MBAUniverse.com spoke to Mr K. Ramkumar, Executive Director, ICICI Bank to find out the ways for creating differentiated B school rankings and the current state of our B schools.

“I am pleased to be part of the MBAUniverse.com B School Survey 2011. I hope the differentiated rankings will be of great help to the students as well as recruiters,” said Mr. Ramkumar.

Commenting on the current state of management education in the country, he said, “Current B-school education is faulty, and is NOT delivering for both students and corporates. B-schools have completely failed to meet their promise."

“The industry expects MBAs coming from top B-schools to conduct business for the company. MBAs fail the test on this parameter. It takes 3 years to retrain them and make them productive for the company. Corporates are not looking for great mathematicians or highly knowledgeable candidates, but those who can execute and mobilize people and resources.”

Calling the B schools to lay more emphasis on increasing the plurality and diversity of classrooms he said, “The B schools should take in more women students if they wish to evolve further from good to great.”

"The MBA entrance exam score based selection process is highly defective as it is steeped in Quant. We do not need managers who are only good in quant, but managers who can think...who have analytical as well as conceptual skills," he further said.

He exhorted the B schools to restore an education structure that is focused on learning and not on salary figures of placed students. Mr. Ramkumar urged the B schools to lay more emphasis on beyond classroom learning. “The focus on learning will be the key identity of the B schools and will ultimately help the B schools in promoting themselves in big way,” he said.

Survey Methodology for multi-dimensional 360 degree perspective
The Survey is based on 25-pages comprehensive questionnaire for Top 100 B-schools. This quantitative survey forms the backbone of Survey 2011. In addition, understanding the importance of stake-holder perceptions, the survey also factors in the views of HR Leaders, current MBA students and MBA aspirants, conducted through a well defined methodology.

In essence, the methodology seeks to evaluate a B-school on three broad parameters: the ‘Input parameters’, the ‘Process parameters’ and the ‘Output parameters’ of an MBA program.

The input includes student aptitude and student proficiency, process includes quality of faculty, physical infrastructure and international initiatives. Output includes the market value academic excellence, recruiters’ perception and students’ experience.

The research partner for the survey is Facts ‘N’ Data, a leading research firm.

The entire methodology, questionnaire and important dates for filling the questionnaire will soon be live on MBAUniverse.com. A dedicated Survey 2011 microsite is soon going to be launched on MBAUniverse.com
