CAT 2011 got over last week, but now it is time for MBA aspirants to crack yet another important MBA entrance exam. The big MBA entrance exam to be held this week is IIFT 2011, the entrance exam for IIFT Delhi and Kolkata for the Academic year 2012-14.

The exam will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011. As there are 5 days to go for IIFT 2011, this article of MBAUniverse.com talks about the overall pattern of the exam.

The pattern of IIFT exam keeps changing. IIFT 2010 had 135 questions, whereas IIFT 2009 had 122 questions. Whether there would be sectional cut offs or not is also not fixed and it keeps changing every year. IIFT 2010 did not have any sectional cut offs mentioned in the exam. The overall difficulty level of the exam is moderate to tough.

The sections of the IIFT exam remain the same every year. The four sections of IIFT are Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning and General Awareness.

Let us have a look at the question pattern of the sections.

Quantitative Ability
The questions generally come from the topics like Number Systems, Progression, Percentages, Averages, Permutation and Combination, Probability, Profit and Loss, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration, Algebra, Time, Speed & Distance etc. IIFT 2010 had 30 questions from this section with moderate to tough difficulty level.

Verbal Ability
This section is divided into two areas, English Usage and Reading Comprehension. In English Usage area, the common topics from which questions are asked are Fill in the blanks, Correct Way of phrasing, Verbal Analogies, Spelling correction, Para Jumble and sentence correction.

The Reading Comprehension passages are generally on the topics of Business, Economics, Psychology and Investment.

Last year, the number of questions in this section was 40. There were 25 questions in the Reading Comprehension section and 15 questions in the English Usage area.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
This section is more or less calculation intensive. The question patterns are on tables, graphs, charts for the Data Interpretation area and caselets and puzzles for the Logical Reasoning area. The difficulty level of this area varies from easy to moderate.

This section had 35 questions in the IIFT 2010 paper.

General Awareness
As the name suggests, you can expect any question under the sun in this section. The questions can be from static general knowledge as well as current affairs. The common areas from which the questions are asked are business, Country-Capital-Currency-Parliaments, Current Affairs, Locations of International Organizations and Economics etc.

There were 30 questions in this section in IIFT 2010.
