After encountering with the worst kind of slowdown in the recent times during 2008, management institutes have been devising ways to strengthen their industry network and ensure some kind of immunity from job loss due to recessionary factors and other reasons. In one such initiative, IIM Ahmedabad has tied up with LinkedIn to be in touch with its regular recruiters and keep a secondary placement option open for its alumni.

To initiate the process, IIM-A will form two groups for its page on LinkedIn. While one will be called the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad group meant for PGP, PGPX, PGP-ABM, PGP-PMP and FPM alumni, the other will be billed as IIM-A Executive Education Alumni group meant for eligible alumni of the Management Development Programme (MDP), Faculty Development Programme (FDP), Armed Forces Programme (AFP), 3-Tier Programme (3-TP) and Management Education Programme (MEP).

The groups will be certified by LinkedIn with an official badge to convey the authenticity of the forums and encourage participation by alumni. The access to these groups will be moderated by IIM-A's alumni office, and all the group members will be verified by the institute. As a result of the tie-up between IIM-A and LinkedIn, recruiters can directly access alumni profiles.

The institute would send email invitations to its alumni to join this professional network. IIM-A has a database for 2,000 employers and would also invite some of its regular recruiters once a sizeable number of alumni join. Initially, only second year post graduate programme (PGP) and PGPX (experienced) would be joining the group in December.

Moreover, the IIM-A groups will facilitate members, who are mid- and senior-level executives with leading corporations and businesses, to strengthen their network and leverage it to their professional advantage. IIM-A also plans to provide recruiters an access to the full-time alumni group for lateral hiring opportunities.

Interestingly, IIM-A has 9,500 alumni from its flagship courses and 21,600 alumni from executive education. The tie-up with LinkedIn is expected to offer career guidance.
