Harvard Business School professor and one of the most influential management thinkers Dr Robert S Kaplan, who has won the second Global Management Guru Award (GMGA) 2012, will address Indian leaders from business, industry and the government at the GMGA 2012 award ceremony on November 9 in New Delhi.

The award has been instituted by Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), set up by the Birla group.

Professor Kaplan, credited with many theories and innovative management practices, will deliver the award lecture after receiving the award. Some of the breakthrough contributions of Professor Kaplan at Harvard Business School and Carnegie Mellon University include ‘time-driven activity-based costing’, balanced scorecard, strategy maps and the Kaplan-Norton strategy execution.

The GMGA award, instituted in 2011, has an evolved process of shortlisting 25 global thought leaders that is followed by an international survey and jury process. The 2012 jury was led by eminent management educationist Dr Pritam Singh.

The board of governors of BIMTECH instituted this award for honoring global thought leaders in the management domain. The award is conferred on a management guru who has influenced management practice worldwide in a fundamental way as a teacher, researcher, writer and a mentor. “The BIMTECH award in management is the most appropriate as there is no global recognition for gurus in management. The award not only considers the immediate impact of the work of the management guru but also leads the contributions to theory and practice. Our aspiration is that this award reaches the heights of most serious global awards such as the Nobel Prize, and we are receiving support from global academic community,” says Dr Chaturvedi, director of BIMTECH, which is also celebrating the 25th year of foundation.

Professor Kaplan, a strong proponent of effective strategy execution and creator of ‘You can’t manage what you don’t measure’ mantra, will address leaders from business, industry and the government including the Planning Commission member and former chairman of Boston Consulting (India), Mr Arun Maira, and Public Enterprises Selection Board chairman Mr Atul Chaturvedi.

The 2011 Global Management Guru Award went to Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of marketing at Goizueta Business School at Emory University’s Dr Jagdish Sheth, a world authority on global competition, strategic thinking, and customer relationship management.

“We are delighted that Professor Kaplan has chosen to accept the Global Management Guru Award in the 25th anniversary year of the Activity Based Costing Methodology propounded by him,” said Dr Pritam Singh, chairman of the board of jury.

Professor Kaplan while accepting the award said, “It is a pleasure to accept the 2012 Global Management Guru Award most generously offered to me. The innovations of ‘time-driven activity-based costing’, Balanced Scorecard, Strategy Maps, the Kaplan-Norton strategy execution system, and my recent work on risk management emanate from a fundamental belief that valid and accurate measurement is at the core of communicating, implementing and monitoring an organization’s strategy whether in the private, public, or NGO sector.”

Dr Kaplan is known for his contributions to the integration of cost and performance management systems to strategy implementation. His diversified researches cover a broad range in performance management systems, cost management systems and risk management systems.

Dr Kaplan joined HBS faculty in 1984 after spending 16 years on the faculty of the business school at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he served as the dean from 1977 to 1983. Kaplan received a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from M. I. T, and PhD in operations research from Cornell University. He has also received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Stuttgart (1994), Lodz (2006), and Waterloo (2008).
