Sports management idea from IIT-K’s VGSOM wins IIM-B Vista Business plan contest ‘Bzzwings’

Riding on the recent Indian win at T20 cricket world cup, ‘Sarvy Sport’ – a team from VGSOM IIT-Kharagpur won the coveted business plan contest Buzzwings, held as part of IIM-B management fest Vista 07.

Another idea ‘Spinach’ – a low calorie restaurant chain – presented by IIM Bangalore team won the runners up award. While the first prize was Rs 75,000 and second prize was Rs 30,000, the winning team from VGSOM also got an offer from Nadathur S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) at IIM-B for incubating the idea.

Speaking to MBAUniverse.com, a euphoric Sarvy Sport team comprising of Ratnakar V, Rahul Yadav and Saurabh Agarwal from VGSOM said, “We are very excited to win this contest. It brings our business idea to reality.” Explaining the idea, they said, “We will be organizing various sports events including a T20 type multi-city tournament for schools.”

Other teams that made it to the finals were: ‘Team Strokes’ from IIM Indore; ‘Gyaana’ from SPJIMR; ‘Men of Honor’ from IIM Calcutta; ‘Online Book Rental’ from ISB Hyderabad; ‘TV Show’ from early stage entrepreneurs; ‘EOS Ltd’ from ISB Hyderabad and ‘Adzone.com’ from SPJIMR.

The competition was organized in three phases. In Phase I, participants were required to submit executive summary of their business plans. For Phase II, 8 teams were selected from phase I. At this stage the teams were provided access to a mentor. These teams submitted their final business plan by October 9. The last phase was held during Vista where eight teams and one wild card entry present their business plan a panel of judges.

The judges for the event were: Mahesh Murthy, Managing Partner, Seedfund; Navin Budhiraja, Senior Principal Architect and CTO, Amazon Flexible Payments Service; Bharath Chinamanthur, Director, Retail Systems; K Kumar, Professor, NSRCEL, IIMB and Dilip R. Mehta, Advisor, NSRCEL, IIMB.
