The annual international business summit at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Confluence, concluded on December 2. Centered on the theme of ‘changing winds, new paradigms of leadership’, the three-day event tried to address questions regarding the future role of leaders in shaping the society amid an increasingly challenging and changing environment that is still recovering from after effects of the global slowdown.

The summit was inaugurated by Prof Samir Barua, director of IIM-A. As part of the First Speaker series, three eminent industry leaders – Ms Debjani Ghosh, MD, (sales & marketing), Intel, south Asia; Mr Arindam Bhattacharya, partner & MD, Boston Consulting Group; and Mr SudhirVasudeva, chairman & managing director, ONGC; shared their experience and views.

The first day saw a gamut of workshops on topics such as corporate social irresponsibility, marketing simulations and customer relationship management and how ancient wisdom can help in entrepreneurial success. About 700 students from various business schools and engineering colleges participated in the event.

With a theme that seeks to explore the role that leaders of tomorrow can play in helping the country tide the tough times, Confluence had two speaker sessions on ‘the global economic turmoil and its after effects’, and ‘the next step – entrepreneurship’ on the second day.

Confluence 2012 organised 22 events across the sectors such as finance, marketing, strategy, policy, etc which saw participation of over 15,000 students from over 370 colleges across India. One of the prominent events was Synergy, which aimed at promoting technological innovations from engineering colleges. It brought together innovators and mentors from CIIE and IIMA who helped innovators commercialize their idea and make it the next big thing.

Another event, ‘Campaign for a cause’, saw participants making videos highlighting key issues plaguing the country, and their solutions for the same. The judge for the event was Mallika Sarabhai, the renowned social activist and classical dancer, who is incidentally an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad. The key issues that the participants chose to highlight included ‘Khap Panchayats: Plaguing the current Panchayati Raj system’, ‘India’s Environment Protection Laws: Cobras without venom’, ‘Plight of the Matsyagandha inland fisheries’, etc.

A number of other events were organized as parts of Confluence. Notable among them was a round table conference by FICCI on ‘Identifying opportunities for increasing collaboration among the industry, educational institutions and the government to increase employability of the youth in India’.
