With various types of institutions offering two-year full-time management programmes in India, MBA Aspirants often get puzzled while understanding the system under which B-schools operate in the country.

As a matter of fact, both MBA and PGDM programmes are equally valued in the industry but only differentiating factor is quality of one programme compared to another. Therefore, just analyzing the nomenclature ‘PGDM’ or ‘MBA’ is not much worth. Generally, Government Universities based institution offer MBA programmes approved by UGC, and private institutions offer PGDM programme approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

Further, the two-year full-time management programmes offered by different institutions in India can be categorized as below:

IIMs & IITs:

Sitting on the top of the Management education in India is Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) set up by Ministry of HRD. Under the IIM canopy, there exist 13 B-schools, including newly established 7 IIMs, which offer PGDM programmes.  These programmes are rated very high in most of the B-schools Rankings and on different academic parameters.   These institutions are autonomous, but are backed by MHRD.

Similarly, some of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) like IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras and ISM Dhanbad offer two-year full time management programmes.

Government-supported institutions:

A number of Ministries of Government of India have also set up some B-schools aimed at training students in specific area of management. Some of the examples are Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) New Delhi & Kolkata, Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), Entrepreneur Development Institute, Ahmedabad etc. 

Government University:

Central Universities and State Universities offer management programmes which are named as Master in Business Administration (MBA). These programmes are very cost effective and offer some of the best Return on Investment (ROI). Institution like Delhi University’s Faculty of Management Study (FMS) Delhi, and Mumbai University’s Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) have very low fee structure as compared to their peers. Still, the passing out graduates from these institutions are offered placements that stand among the best.

Private Institutions:

Some of the best management programmes in the country are offered by well-known Private institutions. Most of these institutes offer AICTE approved PGDM programmes. Some of the top private institutions which compete with IIMs include XLRI Jamshedpur, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, Institute of Management Technology (IMT), S P Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), Mudra Institute of Communication Ahmedabad (MICA) etc. 

Private Universities:

Private Universities also run management programmes. Most of these programmes are either approved by AICTE or UGC. Some of the well –known private university programmes include those offered by institutions like NMIMS, Symbiosis International University, Alliance University, UPES etc. With different departments run by these universities, their B-school offer multi-disciplinary approach in Management education.
