Prepare MBAs as socially-conscious citizens who have the capacity to address and contribute to our societys needs: President
President Dr Pranab Mukherjee has asked the B-schools to prepare MBAs who are not only the potential business leaders and academic thinkers, but also capable to ‘address and contribute to our social needs’.

“B-schools should not only aim at producing successful business managers, business leaders and academic thinkers, but also prepare them as socially-conscious citizens who have the capacity to address and contribute to our society’s needs,” Dr Mukherjee said while addressing inaugural ceremony of golden jubilee celebration of Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) in New Delhi on May 2, 2013.

The President stated that the increased integration of our economy with that of the world calls for managing our economy from the risk of any global financial crisis.

He said that increased trade liberalization and economic cooperation would not count much unless they result in tangible benefits for our people. Hence, thrust should also be placed on meeting other objectives like employment generation and regional development, he said. He emphasized that our export sector should be able to drive the socio-economic development of our country.

Lauding the contribution of IIFT in creating knowledge base on Foreign Trade and International Business, he said, the institute has played a vital role in suggesting government on policy issues related to commerce and foreign trade.

“This institute has provided able support to the government in responding to the challenges faced by our trade and industry from the very beginning,” he said, adding, “the IIFT since its foundation in 1963 has focused on research and capacity building in international trade.”

“Over the year this institution IIFT has created academic strength by providing management education and PhD courses. The institute has rendered crucial knowledge support for our policy makers for better understanding of some critical problems that called for careful policy handling and sound research project.”
He also spoke on his fond memories and association with the institute in past during his term as Union Minster for Trade & Commerce.

President Dr Mukherjee was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Shri Anand Sharma, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Dr. D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for Commerce & Industry were the Guests of Honor. Shri S R Rao Chairman, IIFT & Commerce Secretary also participated in the Function.

The President unveiled ‘Wings of Wisdom’, a sculpture specifically conceptualized to mark respect to knowledge that the Institute inculcates in the minds of youth. He also felicitated the past Directors General and Directors who have had provided leadership to the growth of the Institute.

Shri Anand Sharma, Union Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textile released the Commemorative Volume of Foreign Trade Review, a quarterly journal published by IIFT, and presented its first copy to the President on the occasion.  The journal is 47 years old and has contributed to the gamut of knowledge in the field of international trade.

Dr. Surajit Mitra, Director, IIFT welcomed all the dignitaries at the event and shared with them the achievements and the vision of the institute. “IIFT over the years have responded to the need of the time and started the Centre for Latin American Studies way back in 1971, Centre for International Trade in Technology in 2001, Centre for WTO Studies in 2002, and Centre for SME Studies in 2005,” Dr Mitra said, adding, “The institute proposes to initiate new Centres in the area of Energy and Power, besides financial services shortly.”
