Exhorting B-schools to focus on finding solutions of ‘real issues' like challenges of urbanization, governance and other national and global problems, Union HRD Minister Dr M.M Pallam Raju has asked IIMs and management institutes in India to take on larger challenges and not merely confine themselves to their academic interests.

Dr Pallam Raju said that the management institutes must join hands with government to tackle “challenges on various policy issues like governance, urbanization and national security”. The Union Minister was speaking at the inaugural session of an IIM summit in Goa on May 31, 2013.

He added that B-schools should focus on local issues for an Indian society that is increasingly moving in a global way.

Praising the role of B-schools like Indian Institute of Management for taking initiative on larger issues facing Indian economy and society at large, the Union Minister said, “It is good that IIMs have started working in this direction. But all B-schools should work towards solving the regional issues.”

Dr Pallam Raju also asked B-schools to pursue quality research and bring in advance technology to enhance the quality of education and cope with the challenge of faculty shortage. “Edu-Tech tools MOOCs are emerging as a big force and B-schools must utilize the advance education technologies to uplift their process quality,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of State for HRD Dr. Shashi Tharoor asked the business schools to look beyond profit and come forward to contribute towards the overall development of the society.

“Business world and B-schools today need to look beyond earning profit to contribute to the society. They must work in national interest and focus on adding value to the living standard of average Indian,” he said.

Dr Tharoor applauded the IIM community and its alumni for “making a great contribution to India’s economic resurgence on global stage”.

The world conference on "Emerging Issues in Management" is being jointly hosted by Indian Institutes of Management, the premier management institutes in India. The two-day conference began on May 31 in Goa.
