Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon is amongst the top non-IIMs which are hit by ‘Inflated CAT Score Scam’. Dr Mukul P Gupta, Director, MDI Gurgaon, responding to MBAUniverse.com queries, termed the inflated CAT score episode a ‘failure’ on part of CAT authorities and IIMs and said a ‘just process of recovery’ is now required.

MBAUniverse.com was first to report this scam on June 24, 2013 at 11 AM. After MBAUniverse.com published the report, some of the top B-schools have already initiated action.

After one week since IIMs notified IDs of inflated CAT scorecards, B-schools are yet to receive the master datasheet, resulting in further hindrance to their academic process. MDI Director Dr Mukul P Gupta has confirmed that his institute is yet to receive the master datasheet of original CAT scores, basis which MDI admission merit list for 2013 could be revised. The institute has identified 5 students with inflated CAT score on its ‘roll’.

Responding to MBAUniverse.com queries, Dr Gupta has said that the CAT score scam episode has marred the credibility of both CAT 2012 authorities and IIMs. We bring here response from Dr Mukul P Gupta to the MBAUniverse.com queries on ‘Inflated CAT Score Scam’.

Q: How many of the 80 candidates listed in the IIM notification did get into the admission process of your institute (GD/PI short list & final selection list)?

A: Shortlist for GD/PI was quite big and we have not ascertained the numbers there. However, we know that 5 candidates out of these 80 are on our rolls.

Q: Have you received any formal communication from IIMs on Inflated CAT Score? What did they advise?

A: We have received a formal communication alerting us about the scores of 80 candidates for CAT 2012 being invalid. We have also been informed that correct scores shall be made available to us soon.

Q: What action are you going to take against those candidates who have been finally selected and admitted to your institute?

A: Our action would be based on the corrected scores that we receive. This could result in a revision of our merit/admissions list.

Q: After this goof up, what is your reaction on the process of CAT and handling the prestigious MBA entrance test by IIM?

A: This is a failure and a credible and just process for recovery from the failure is now required.

Q: How will this episode impact the CAT credibility?

A: There could be some short term dent in its credibility. CAT is quite capable of recouping the loss of reputation if there is any. There would be no long term impact on the credibility of CAT if such events don’t recur.

Q: Since you have a formal agreement involving financial transaction for CAT data sharing with IIMs, will you seek any compensation for the loss of your credibility because of your association with CAT and the current embarrassment caused due to the same?

A: That is between us and IIMs and would not be a matter of public discussion.
