S K Barua to be the new IIM-A director, Pankaj Chandra to take charge of IIM-B

After weeks of speculations, two prestigious IIMs are getting ready to welcome their new directors.

Sources close to the development have confirmed to MBAUniverse.com that IIM-A will be headed by Dr S K Barua, who is currently a faculty at IIM-A and member of the IIM-A governing board. Dr Pankaj Chandra, also a faculty at IIM-A, will head to Bangalore to be the director of IIM-B. Said a source at IIM-A, "Yes it is true that IIM-A will be headed by Dr S K Barua and IIM-B will be headed by Dr Pankaj Chandra. However, we are yet to get official documents from Ministry of HRD."   

With IIM-A since 1980, finance expert Dr S K Barua has prepared policy papers for the Finance Minister, the Governor of Reserve Bank of India and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries. He is on the boards of several large organizations including the Indian Oil Corporation. He is also a visiting Professor at academic institutions in the United States, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Cyprus.  

Dr Barua has played an active role in IIM-A affairs. He is the member, Governing Board of IIM, Ahmedabad since August, 2007. He is the Chairman, Management Development Programmes, Member, Admissions Committee, Member, Placement Committee since April, 2007. He was also the head of PGP programme earlier.

Dr Barua did his Master of Technology from IIT, Kanpur in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. He did his doctorate in Management from IIM, Ahmedabad, India. He has published over 200 papers, articles and cases. He has co-authored two books:  Portfolio Management; and The Great Indian Scam: story of the missing Rs. 4000 crore which became a best-seller.  

Wharton educated IIM-A professor Dr Pankaj Chandra has been associated with IIM-A since 1997. He was the Chairperson of Doctoral Programme at IIM-A from 2003 to 2005. Currently he is the Chairperson of Centre for Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship at IIM-A. In past, he has been associated with top tier B-schools like Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell Universiy International University of Japan, Nigaata, Japan Faculty of Management, McGill University, Montreal, Canada and ISB Hyderabad.

Dr Chandra did his doctorate from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1989.

Dr Chandra has consulted for leading institutions and firms including World Bank, Washington DC., Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, NASSCOM, UNIDO, Geneva, Apollo Tyres, Blue Star, Asian Paints, Hindustan Lever, He is also on the Board of Directors of companies.  

Earlier, in October, both Dr Bakul Dholakia and Dr PG Apte had completed their terms as director of IIM-A and IIM-B respectively. Dr Dholakia has since then decided to take up the role of strategic advisor of Adani Group. Dr Apte continues to be with IIM-B.
