CAT 2013 Registration indicates changing profile of MBA applicants

IIMs and Prometric have announced the registration data for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2013 which shows significant trends related to increased female applicants as well as candidates with work experience and engineering backgrounds

CAT 2013 registration process got over on September 26, 2013. Around 1, 96,000 vouchers were sold, while the total registrations for CAT 2013 closed at around 1, 94,000. In- depth analysis of CAT 2013 registration data shows significant trends. For instance, females applicants count to nearly 30% of total registrations while applicants with engineering and technology background continue to dominate CAT registrations with around 70% of total share.

Indian Institutes of Management and Prometric have announced the registration data for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2013.  Prometric is the test partner of IIMs in developing and delivering CAT 2013. 

As per the CAT 2013 registration data release by IIMs and Prometric, female aspirant registrations are up from 28 per cent in 2012, and candidates with two plus years of work experience are up from 13 per cent last year. 

“While overall registration has declined, the ratio of female candidates over two years has continued to steadily increase, to 29 per cent. The number of candidates with two or more years of work experience, registering for CAT, has risen to 16 per cent over the same span” said Dr.  Rohit Kapoor, CAT 2013 Convenor. 

Candidates with little or no work experience are down from 68 per cent last year.  Dr. Rohit Kapoor said, “Candidates with little to no work experience have declined to 66 per cent.  It is understandable, in our current economy that many working professionals are choosing to acquire greater work experience before diverting attention from their present employment to undertake an MBA.”

Aspirants with technology and engineering backgrounds continue to hold a large share of total registrations in CAT 2013. Aspirants with engineering and technology background comprise  70 per cent of total registrations, an increase of 6 per cent from last year, continuing a two-year increase.  Aspirants with Economics, Management and Science background comprise 23 per cent, while remaining 7 percent aspirants belong to other academic backgrounds.

CAT 2013 also saw a 2 per cent rise in DA (differently abled) candidate registrations. 

IIMs have increased their capacity to accommodate more students from this year. The 13 Indian Institutes of Management have altogether added more than hundred seats for admission year 2014, taking the total tally to 3335 seats, across 13 IIMs. “This year’s CAT Aspirants will have greater opportunity for admission into the IIMs,” Dr Kapoor, convener of CAT 2013, said, adding, “Across all IIMs, 115 seats have been added for B-School admissions this year, taking the total number of seats in IIMs to 3,335.We now set our focus on delivering the CAT for nearly 2 lakh aspirants seeking to earn a place among this year’s available IIM seats.”

By region, Maharashtra had the highest number of CAT registrations, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

“In 2012, Prometric and the IIMs delivered 191,642 CAT exams,” said Soumitra Roy, General Manager, Prometric India.  “This year we can expect similar participation as seen by the registration numbers.  Together with the IIM Convenor, we have tirelessly worked to ensure all test centres are prepared for this year’ CAT window.  We wish all candidates the very best for CAT 2013 and encourage all test takers to prepare well and arrive for their exams one and a half hours before their scheduled appointments.”

Prometric Testing Private Limited (Prometric India) which has partnered with the IIMs to deliver the CAT examination since 2009, has stated that all the necessary preparations have been made to ensure CAT 2013 candidates have a smooth testing experience.  

CAT 2013 will be conducted over a period of 20 days from 16 October to 11 November 2013.
