The decline in CAT 2013 registrations and increase in overall seats across the 13 IIMs may help the prospective MBA aspirants to book their seats in one of the IIMs for Admission 2014.
If you are appearing in CAT 2013, you would probably compete with 58 other prospective students for a single seat in IIMs. The seat- student ratio for Admission 2014 will be 1:58.

Total registrations for CAT 2013 have seen a decline of over 9%. When the registrations ended on September 26, the last day of online registrations, around 1, 96,000 vouchers were sold, while the total registrations for CAT 2013 closed at around 1, 94,000.

This drop in registrations means that a CAT 2013 aspirant will have less number of students to compete against, for a seat in one of the 13 IIMs. If you are appearing in CAT 2013, you would probably compete with 58 other prospective students for a single seat in IIMs. The seat- student ratio for Admission 2014 will be 1:58.

The number of CAT takers has dipped significantly since the year 2008, when there were 2.76 lakh applicants. This number was reduced to 2.04 lakhs in 2010 and 2.05 lakhs in 2011.  This trend showed a sign of revival in the year 2012, when the number grew to 2.14 lakh.

MBAUniverse.com was the first media to report the drop in CAT registrations to 200,000 on September 23, 2013. In our previous article, we focused the discussion on the reasons for low Registrations in CAT 2013.

However, this should come as a blessing in disguise for CAT 2013 aspirants as their chances to enter the premium B school in India, the IIMs have brightened. Less registration for CAT 2013 and increase in total seats across 13 IIMs give the aspirants a real chance to knock the door of their desired IIMs, for admission in 2014.

IIMs have increased their capacity to accommodate more students from this year. The 13 Indian Institutes of Management have altogether added more than hundred seats for admission year 2014, taking the total tally to 3335 seats, across 13 IIMs. “This year’s CAT Aspirants will have greater opportunity for admission into the IIMs,” Dr Kapoor, convener of CAT 2013, said, adding, “Across all IIMs, 115 seats have been added for B-School admissions this year, taking the total number of seats in IIMs to 3,335.”

The table below shows the total number of IIM seats in 2013 in comparison to the IIM admission 2014.

The seat student ratios in last 3 CAT exams are as follows:

CAT 2011: 1:69

CAT 2012: 1:66

CAT 2013: 1:58

However, experts and statisticians believe that the decrease in number of CAT 2013 registrations and improved Seat: student ratio will result in more intense competition. This view is based on the fact that the serious MBA aspirants will still compete hard for a seat in one of the IIMs and only the non-serious aspirants have backed out from CAT 2013 registrations.

Besides, the consolidated pool of candidates would also result in a more competitive CAT -2013 which will be conducted in a 20 days window between October 16 and November 11, 2013.
