XAT 2014 registrations are off to a flying start! As many as 48,000 candidates have registered for
XAT 2014 as on October 29, 2013. The registrations will end on November 22. Speaking to MBAUniverse.com, XLRI examination chairperson Dr Vishwa Ballabh said that last year, 92,000 candidates registered for XAT, the second most important exam after CAT.
Analysis of candidates registered for XAT 2014 shows interesting trends. 33,000 students out of 48,000 are from the engineering background. There are 32870 male candidates and 15130 female candidates who have registered so far. Prof Ballabh said, this year it is expected that the number of candidates will go up to 1, 10,000 till the last day of registration, November 22, 2013.
Xavier Aptitude Test- XAT 2014, conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, will be held on January 5, 2014 across the country as well as in two cities abroad namely Dubai and Kathmandu. The registration window for this test began on August 12 and will close on November 22. This year a total number of 116 B schools will accept XAT scores. XAT 2014 : Exam Pattern
Like previous years, XAT 2014 too will be a traditional paper pen mode type of exam. The test is discriminatory and therefore students are advised to choose the questions carefully to maximize their scores.
The paper will consist of two parts to be attempted during 2.3- 2.35 hrs duration. The first part will include four sections which are verbal and logical ability, decision making, quantitative ability and data interpretation and general knowledge. All the questions will be of objective type to be solved during the duration of 160 minutes.
The second part includes a subjective test of essay writing the duration for which is 20 minutes. Despite being a part of the main paper, the marks of General knowledge will not be used for short listing candidates for GD and PI. But it is used by XLRI Jamshedpur and some other Associate Member institutes at the time of final selection.

A guide for XAT Preparation
While talking to MBAUniverse.com, XLRI’s admission chairperson Dr Vishwa Ballabh advised the students taking XAT 2014 to improve their reading interpretation skills and to practice regularly for quantitative section. Since the paper is discriminatory, so according to Dr Ballabh the candidates should choose the questions carefully to maximize their scores. He said that the essay part of the paper is evaluated for ideas and variance, cohesiveness of thought and grammar.
Dr Ballabh also advised the candidates to write the essay properly as the marks of essay will also be considered for the final selection for XLRI and some other XAT Associate Institutes.
